Nanook
Posts: 846
Whipped up some of Mickey's coffee rub for the first time today. Tried it on a couple of BSCB. They were awesome!
If you haven't tried it, I would highly recommend. Thanks Mickey!

I actually came up with the recipe. ..he dropped a little ancho in it and now @Mickey is some kinda rub god.Green egg, dead animal and alcohol. The "Boro".. TN

We use it on beef, pork, turkeys, and chicken. Best tip I can give is buy your ancho in the bulk spice area.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd.

I have bought my ancho from Penzey's. A pound was about $14.00 + S&H. Reasonable price and good quality. They are in Wisconsin, not too far from the Great White North.

@Nanook - The Silk Road spice shop in Calgary has a good ancho powder. Not sure if they have a shop in Edmunchuck, worth looking into. I ordered by mail once, but the shipping cost as much as the product. Attached article says they may be in Edmonton:http://blogs.edmontonjournal.com/2014/02/28/calgarys-popular-silk-road-spice-merchant-coming-to-edmonton/+1 with @bettysnephes - Penzey's has good ancho. Shipping from Penzey's to a Canadian address can be quite expensive, I'm close enough to the border I use a US drop service and then drive down a get it. Orders over $30 they ship free to a US address.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

Looked for the recipe and found it here. I would like to make this. Does it matter if I use real espresso vs. the instant version used in the recipe?

I have been wanting to try this. Is it great on briskets? I am doing one in couple weeks. Might be perfect time to try.Boom

I did cheap out and only bought 1 bottle of ancho (McCormicks gourmet)and used nescafe espresso, to lazy to run back for a second bottle but still did well with it.

Mickey said:Coffee Rub (turkey, chicken, beef & pork) Equal part: Instant Expresso Ground coffee Equal part: Brown Sugar ½ part: Black Pepper ½ part: Kosher Salt ½ part: Garlic Powder ¾ part: Ancho Chili Powder Don't worry on exact, just close on measurement. I used to use turbinado sugar but we like with brown better. This is pulled from MollyShark, Hungry Man, & Richard In Fl then tweaked. I find the ancho chili powder is far less expensive in the bulk spice area than the bottled area ( have used both light or dark version). I make it starting with a half cup Instant Expresso Ground coffee and work from there as it seems to store well if sealed.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. It's time to make some. I typically want to follow a recipe exactly but I'm wondering on the coffee brand. I will need to order from somewhere like Amazon to get the Medaglia's brand. Can I substitute for another brand?

Just wanted to thank you for the recommendation on Silk Road Spices. I put an order in and received it the next day. Since I was going to pay shipping I loaded up! The good folks at Silk Road even through in some extra goodies in my order and it's not like I ordered huge (~$50). But ancho was definitely in there.Skiddymarker said:@Nanook - The Silk Road spice shop in Calgary has a good ancho powder. Not sure if they have a shop in Edmunchuck, worth looking into. I have found whole dried Ancho Peppers at some Ethnic grocery stores and just grind them up.
Check the Mexican section of your grocery store ?

@Nanook FWIW there are no reviews on the Amazon.com item below but I ordered some to try it out. They ship to Alaska so I'm assuming they'll ship to you, too. It didn't qualify for free shipping but I ordered QTY = 3 and it was less than $10 shipping to me. (QTY = 1 was around $7 S/H so I wanted to maximize my shipping fees).
It's a bit of a risk, I know, but I'll report back with a follow up to give my opinion on quality.
