Darn, broken band bolt

It had been a few months since I check my bolts so I took out the wrench and checked the tightness of my band bolts.  One on my XL seems a bit loose.  Gave it a turn and it sheered clean off.  The two egg dealers in my area don't carry any spare parts.  Just checked 5 local hardware stores and no "clinch studs" to be found.  Ordered a band parts kit but now have to wait almost a week for it to come in.

Anyone ever used their egg missing one of the band bolts that are on the hinge?

    Clinch studs?

Do you mean carriage bolt? They should be very easy to get and replace... did you just break the bolt or the did the band break as well?

Not the carriage bolt, one of the studs that attach the hinge to the band.  Top band there are two on each side.  Now only one on the right side.

Fastenal should have them. If there is one near you, of course.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

  • If you ask me those 1/4" studs are undersized for the load they are expected to support. When I added my nest handler I wound up with very minimal thread engagement where the upper bars attach to the circular band.
    Gittin' there...

I've got a bag of about 100 of these somewhere...I'll need to search the house for them. Needed a couple a few years ago for the same reason as yours. I'll look, if I find them I can send some your way.

Thank you @womaus!!! But I went and ordered the parts pack.  Should have in a few days. Yesterday I wound up playing it safe and did the rib eyes on the weber.

Is this the correct stud for the XL (found on Fastenal website).
1/4-20 x 1-1/4 Zinc Plated Self Clinching Stud

I know I want stainless but I wanted the correct dimensions if anyone has them.
    Thanks,

I called the mothership and they sent me a assembly kit free of charge.

How much did you pay for the kit?

I think it was $16... but it STILL HAS NOT ARRIVED.  Can't bear the thought of Easter weekend without my EGG....

Even the local Fastenal has to order these...

Local Egg dealer ordered Monday and the parts are still not here today.  Now it won't be until next week until they are delivered.
    Not happy about this.

Find a fastener store locally and bring in your old bolt.  You want a grade 5 or better.

He's looking for the self-clinching studs, not the band bolts.

radamo, I don't know what the correct size is, but as nola said, take an old one to fastenal. They will match it for you.

EDIT: Sorry, radamo, I just saw your note about fastenal. Wow! Mccaster carr has them, but you'd still have to order. http://www.mcmaster.com/#self-clinching-studs/=rlcdd2

Charlesmaneri may be your best bet. He might be right around the corner, but Long Island is a long island!

Oh, one of the 4 that hold the hinge to the band, not the carriage bolts that cinch the band.

    Charles,
Thanks so much for the offer.  I found a guy here near where I work that had a boat load of 'em.  He just handed me some.  I bought some cherry wood to at least give him some business. Seem like nice guys I may start to shop there.
