Vacuum Sealer: Ziploc

Comrades,
I have been looking at getting sous vide for christmas, so will also need a vacuum sealer. I am very hesistant to spend over $100 I may/may not use extensively. Lately, I have seen ziploc brand popping up everywhere. It looks cheaper than FoodSaver and better (based on ratings) of other home-use competitors. I do not want one I would keep on counter.
Does anyone have any experience or advice on this? Anything appreciated.

I think foodsaver also has some models that under $100, and well-reviewed on Amazon. I have used the ziploc vacuum bags with my foodsaver.Had to laugh when the description said that it can crush a can... your food won't stand a chance!#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

If you google foodsaver service depots you can sometimes get refurbished units for half price or less. Full warranty

I have the Ziploc brand VS and I am not a fan of it. Its pretty weak and does not vacuum the air out very well. When I seal the bags, I always do a double seal but often times pull them out of the freezer with air leaks.

If you are a Costco member, they have a great buy on the new 4800 series. $120 as I recall.http://www.costco.com/FoodSaver®-4880-2-in-1-System.product.100071662.htmlDelta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

Even if you're not a member of Costco, you can still buy online. You will pay 5% more, but the price is usually lower than anywhere else. I bought an Aerogarden that was $100.00 off regular price. Such a deal and we joined a week later after going in and looking around the store.

Just some food for thought, for sous vide, you can also use normal ziplock bags and "pack" them by displacing air by submerging the bag in the water and then sealing up before the seal goes under water.I have a food saver and there are times, when it drives me nuts, mostly when I'm doing big runs of packing and the pump starts to overheat or there is some liquid that has gotten into the machine."Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you who you are."
