Wicked Good Weekend Warrior

So, I made my regular trip to Ace Hardware today to pick up a few bags of lump. When I got there, no Weekend Warrior. I asked the store manager if they had any in the back and was told that Ace stopped carrying Wicked Good "because they changed their supplier and the quality had dropped off". So, according to him, all Ace stores stopped carrying it. He said it was replaced with the Kamado Joe lump, which he said was made in the same place as the old Weekend Warrior, and was the same thing. He hooked me up on the price of the Komado Joe lump, but I'm not impressed. Not the same stuff at all. A few big pieces, like what was in WGWW, but mainly chips, dust and small pieces. Anyone now if this is true about Wicked Good, or if the guy was just trying to sell me what they had? Also, other recommendations are needed. Weekend Warrior was my go-to lump for low and slow cooks. I can't get Ozark Oak locally, or I would try that. On a side note, if anyone is making a trip to Georgia in the near future and is willing to bring me a few bags of Ozark Oak, I'd be eternally grateful.

If you liked wicked good there is a lump on amazon called fogo that is even better than wicked good was. You have to watch the price though the 35 pound bag will vary in price from day to day. I have paid $35 before but I have seen it up to $45.

Firecraft.com has OO for $10.95 and free shipping over $99.

What part of the country are you in? Might be able to ship you a pallet for a decent proce or get you in on a group buy of Rockwood.

I think there's an academy sports in Athens. Their website says they're selling B&B lumps @ 9.99 for 20#. I have never tried B&B so you'll need to look it up at Naked Whiz's website.

I recently bought a bag of WG lump, I used it on an overnight Pork Shoulder cook. I could not have been more disappointed. First off, I had a hard time getting it started, I use a chimney starter, but it was difficult. When I did get it going, it wouldn't stay lit. On two separate occasions, the WG went out. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep. It would start out fine, but 2 hours in, the temp slowly started to drop. I prefer Wegmans lump to WG. Probably won't buy it again.

I grabbed a bag of Kamodo Joe lump from ace hardware.. I haven't used it yet for more than one cook, but it was easy to get to temp.

I have used B&B Lump almost exclusively for 3 years now. It works as well for me as anything I've used. It does seem to burn down a little faster than some others, but the cost difference more than makes up for that.Large BGE Decatur, AL

I Am in the process of finishing up a bag of bge lump. Once I try the wicked good I will report back to see if I felt it declined in quality. I was a very big fan previously. When was the last time you did something for the first time? - Zick Boulder, CO

Just did a cook yesterday using WGWW and, as always, it performed just fine. Sometimes a little hard to light but, if you think WW is hard you should have been around for the Competition Blend we had a few years ago! Once you got it lit though, it burned HOT and long.
The last 4 bags I've picked up have has some huge pieces in them and not a lot of chips or dust. I guess even the best have bad days.

It was my favorite coal for low and slow. My last few bags purchased a couple months ago have been disappointing. First it had a lot more chips and dust. Second, it wasn't the heavy dense hardwood that I was use to getting from them. The coals weren't bad, just not worth the premium being charged. For about 25% less money, I could get Royal Oak and there is nothing about the current WGWW that causes me to want to pay more than RO.
Going to try Rockwood next.

B&B is kind of my go to charcoal sin
ce it is readily available at Academy - 5 minute drive from my house. The current sale is pretty good. Ive been cooking with RO recently and like it.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -
My local ACE no longer carries WGWW, so I tried the Kamando Joe. I think the KJ is close to the WG. I did notice a little more ash. Not much difference in burn time or smoke.
-
I never was super impressed with wgww - several times I had it spark like crazy, until I removed the sparking piece. while the sizes of lump wasn't bad, having to dig through and discard lit pieces of charcoal was annoying. sparking so much you would have thought it was fireworks, haha

I believe it is from their original source, good stuff. WG changed their source and their current product would not be my first choice.
