So we all love our mavericks.... I think.

Both of mine are dead. Food probes are reading on off, like 140 when I'm in the 70 degree house. Doesn't change when I put it in raw meat either. Just broke probes.

So replace the probes?? Or what's my upgrade options??

Thanks in advance for helping me spend some money.

Bite the bullet and get a digiQ II

The DudeThis is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you's. And, uh, lotta strands to keep in my head, man. Lotta strands in old Duder's head. Luckily I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug regimen to keep my mind, you know, limber.

If I bite that bullet I think it'll be a stoker. Doing some financial investigation in the wife right now.

I have problems with mine: range, loosing connection even when nearby the device, graphs not working on Apple devices and device crashing in the middle of the night. The tech support guy has replied quickly but he is not familiar with the device and is waiting for the developers to get back to him. More to come. I think that I will return mine and get a CyberQ wifi controler.

  • I'm not gonna go out and spend 400$ to replace broken probes, was just seeig what's out there. When I upgrade my controller and everything I want a stoker for multiple eggs and using a couple meat probes.

    @travisstrick

Thanks man, will do in am

I have found no need at all on spatchcocked chicken/turkey. No need on the naked hams or anything turbo. Sold my digiQ and Travis borrowed my PartyQ so long ago it has become his. Have two mavericks in the storage box that have not been pulled in over a year. Where I am going with this is I have become FREE of that stuff. I live with two Thermapens and life iis good.
Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

I can see that trend working just fine. I still use my maverick for a little extra insurance while I do long low slow cooks while I'm sleeping or doing something. The food probe is ussless untill you get to the end. My partyQ has been a dream for anything over 4 hours and frees me up to do other things or run an errand.

Your a machine man! Thermapens holster'd on both hips. I'm still enjoying a little extra insurance.

I think some vendors have high temp or heavy duty probes for the et-732. Try Amazon or Big Poppa Smokers. The probes that ship with the et-732's are inferior compared to the ones that used to ship with the et-73, from what I have heard.

I have been happy with the Maverick - only use it for Butt's and Brisket.  I like that I can put the meat on - then not open the lid till I am getting close.

From my perspective - the Maverick vs the Temp Controller products are apples and oranges.   One is just reporting what is going on - the other is controlling it.

I think a new Egger should learn to manage temps first.  After that - then make it easier.  I do not regret starting with a Maverick - I am seriously considering going to temp control this winter - time will l tell.

I bought these about 1yr or so and they have been just fine. I like the 6' cables because I have no table yet so I just lay it on my gasser but I can see the extra length being a hassle if you are just laying it close to the egg

I bought the remington a few weeks ago when they had a sale on 39.99 and free shipping and have used it two times and it worked like a charm, also when i open it up and read the instuctions it said warranty was listed for maverick and gave maverick address and tel. no. so its prob. the same as the 732

I buy these hybrid probes for replacement and always keep a couple on hand.  They work as a food or a pit probe.

Mine worked correctly the first 3 or 4 times I used it. Then the pit probe went out. I called and they made me pay for a new one, which I did. It worked a little after that but for the last year I haven't used it because the temps aren't right. They are at least 50 degrees off all the time, sometimes more.

Of all the accessories I have purchased for my Egg, I am the most disappointed with the Maverick.

Of course, I quickly realized I didn't really need it anyway.

ive only used mine for low and slows and after a while just stopped using it altogether dont really need to know the temp of a butt for the first 10 or so hours anyways. for temp control theres my old mechanical guru pitmaster, if they made those again i would buy another, they should have done a ten year anniversary this year with them
:D theres also old school with the easily made mikeyt rings

For under $40 you can get new probes, both of them, with longer cables (if your's are the old 36" ones) and improved heat tolerance. Amazon has them for under $16 each, with free shipping. Given that the whole 732 sells for around $60, probably worth while to update your probes. As Travis says, try calling and see what "Pricilla" can do for you. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

I have a Thermoworks 8060 - great unit, expensive, built like a tank and high heat tolerant - but no wireless function, so the Maverick sees most pit duty.

  • I must not have spoke with the right person she just said replacement probes are for sale on the website.

Ill check out those amazon probes @caliking .

    I totally agree.

@Hi54putty, after I had my Mav for 6-8 months, I kept getting the weird temp readings all the time.  Although it was past warranty, I called and spoke to a rep who told me to send it in and they would "check it out".. I did so, and they simply replaced it with a new one.  It has worked flawlessly since.

    You might try that.
