Doesn't matter as long as the monsters are fully carbonized. Big ones can be made smaller, but little pieces can't grow.__________________________________________It's not a science, it's an art. And it's flawed.- Camp Hill, PA

I'd prefer a bag of average size pieces but would want large over dust.

What did you test?

I too prefer fist size pieces, I would see a 5lb piece as a bad thing (but better then 5lbs of dust...)

I sense a surprise twist in the plot very soon here.Flint, Michigan

Looks like the Whiz got him some Kamado Joe Lump charcoal. I know he was going to do a review of it per his Facebook page. I use it all the time and it is good stuff with lots of huge pieces just like in his picture. Do I win a prize Whiz??

Bad thing. Breaking up a large chunk is going to result in chunks, chips and dust.
If you don't think too good, don't think too much.
Afton, VA -
I would just put that aside for my next low and slow. No reason to break that up. The fogo lump I got off amazon over half the bag is pieces that size. I put 3 of them on top of the leftover lump from a previous cook this weekend and did pulled beef and after 8 hours they are now fist sized for my next cook. I prefer big pieces it makes for better airflow.
-
Bad ..
Considering I have pushed my remaining lump up the side off the egg, added fresh and redistributed on every cook since my first - my opinion of large and small pieces has merged. If it has to be broken up - it's just work. -
I like have a few large pieces so I can put them on the bottom then everything else on top. I usually have plenty of smaller lump laying around somewhere to fill in with.Dunedin, FL

was finding cowboy lump last summer with whole logs, i just dumped and burned, never a problem, logs bigger than 3 inch diameter and 8 or 9 inches long. if you havent updated cowboy from the milled wood scrap, you might want to do that, its a whole different animal now and probably the biggest source in the north east now, i dont even see royal oak anymore. answer c, i really dont care, it all burns, dust and all
)

BI'd prefer a mix with fist size being the largest, and minimal dust.I'd also prefer to drink without a hangover - can I put in that request too?+++++++++++++++++++++++++++Austin, Texas. I'm the guy holding a beer.

B. I would worry that the large chunks were not "carbonized" throughout. (not sure that is the right term) I've noticed large pieces tend to smoke and spark more, don't like that and I do not like to break up chunks.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

B. The more mid-sized and smaller pieces (discounting dust) gives more fuel per volume and thus longer burn times overall.Nashville TN 2 LBGE's and counting

I like medium chunks of lump baseball size

What was the question?---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada
