Can your dome thermo die??? I mean I'm sure it can. I was letting my egg come to temp and was like good gracious this is taking forever. Opened it up and got hit by a huge flash. Flames a blazing.
Dome is reading 150
Stuck thermapen in top and it went to 400 then 500 then HI
Oh well
Doing a low and slow so now I've gotta reign this bad boy back in

Year warranty on the thermometer. If it's older than that, you can buy the Tel-tru thermometer on Amazon.

Less on Amazon than Egg.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

Ok guys good. I'm still covered under warranty.
Now I need a little help getting egg back down. It's shut down and I'm burping every few min. When I get down I'd like to stop at 250-300
Will fire still be lit? Or am I letting ambient temp out?

Thought thermo was working. It's screwed. It's just flopping around now_______________________________________________XLBGE

I'd just shut the vents down to tiny slivers, like you're cooking at 225 and wait. Every time you open it it gets a big dose of oxygen and that just makes more heat.

Any chance it went all the way around?XL,L,SWinston-Salem, NC

Ok done. Any idea in time? I'm need two eggs in about an hour_______________________________________________XLBGE

@hi54putty
Pretty sure no but good idea. I was sitting on porch with it_______________________________________________XLBGE -
You should be ok. You could put a pan of water in there to speed it up. Just try not to open it unnecessarily.

Take the clips off both thermometers and just switch the working one from egg to egg

Great idea. I've got the maverick in the small now so I'll put that thermo in large to know where I'm at_______________________________________________XLBGE -

Scoop out some hot coals (put in small Egg) and add unlit coals to calm it down.
Switch thermometers and move on.

I checked it in boiling water. It doesn't move. I've emailed the mother ship to see what's up. It's less than a year old by a few weeks.
I was sitting on the porch with it reading. It never moved passed 100._______________________________________________XLBGE -
Sounds to me like you wrapped the thermo around, it wasn't reading 150 it was reading something really much more than 800. You fried it, I always suggest you remove the thermo before a clean burn - which is kinda what you started....Check it out, tighten the nut on the back and see if you can recalibrate. I've had the dome thermo "flop around" and it was just super loose.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!
-
@skiddymarkertried that. it wont move, i mean it will move when i move the bolt, but it wont detect any temperature change, from in the air to boiling water to a 800 degree egg. Im not being prideful but it did not wrap around while heating up_______________________________________________XLBGE
-
If it doesn't move when you tap on it (ok, bang on it) after putting it in some hot water or something, it's toast. There's a bi-metallic spring in there and it probably broke. That don't happen often, I think you deserve a medal.
