I had about 1/3 of the firebox lit with lump tonight at the end of a cook, all tiny pieces that would be liable to clog the ventilation if I dumped new lump on it tomorrow. Instead, I decided to open the vents and let it burn.
Being spent charcoal, it wasn't getting nuclear hot. 500 dome, tops. I had some black burn marks on my pizza stone and thought, "lets see if it cleans up good like the platesetter," and proceeded to put the cold stone directly into the firebox.
Seemed to be going smoothly. Egg was smoking from whatever it was burning off. Stone holding up nicely. After 20 minutes I pulled the stone out...and into the 40* night air. CRACK. 2 pieces, about 1/3 and 2/3.
Is it useless now? Anyone try and repair and/or cook on one? It wasn't BGE brand. Wedding gift, made in Taiwan and clearly not top of the line. Still, it had served us well over the course of maybe 8 pies since August.

I've heard of people repairing the platesetter, but not a pizza stone. Maybe I missed it if someone did it?Flint, Michigan

Just curious, what brand pizza stone? I had a pampered chef stone first and it did something similar.
-
I honestly have no idea. Definitely on the cheaper end of the spectrum. Possibly pampered chef but it would be the kind one would pick up at Target or Bed Bath & Beyond
-
Not sure if I would want a chemical right next to my pizza. What if you did a metal band around the circle? Maybe get two hose clamps and attach a piece of wire that would go around the stone and screw the clamps to tighten it??

Why risk it? Just get another stone. Write it off as stupid tax (the price you pay for being stupid). I've paid a lot of stupid tax in my life and a new pizza stone doesn't even rate a mention in my ledger.Flint, Michigan

Chalk it up as a learning experience on thermal shock.

I'd just get another one. This link is Kitchen Collection 15".I have the 13" use it on my MBGE, cooked maybe 30 pizzas, stone is nearly black now, it is holding up great. never been over 600.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

You just scored yourself two "half moon" baking stones. OK, one 1/3 moon and one 2/3 moon.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.
-
I use mine as half moon stones as SmokeyPitt suggested and it works great. I have also put the two side together when cooking pizza and it worked just fine. My stone was not an egg stone as well.

You better believe that was my story to the wife!SmokeyPitt said:You just scored yourself two "half moon" baking stones. OK, one 1/3 moon and one 2/3 moon.

Cost plus world market has cheap stones. Mines held up really well and if it breaks, it doesn't break the bank.Large BGE & mini stepchild & a KJ Jr.The damp PNW
