Rainy, cool day on Saturday, so decided to cook some chili. Gave the egg a break yesterday, then when I went outside tonight to fire it up for burgers, I took the cover off to find small ant-like bugs all over the outside of the egg. They were running up the nest, the base, and all the way up the dome. After I started brushing them away, it seemed like they just kept coming out of nowhere. Went ahead and fired her up hoping that the heat would send them packing, but still kept seeing a random one every few minutes, especially on the side shelves. Has anybody had this problem before? Kinda wish they were inside so I could just nuke em, but not sure how to keep em off the outside.

When you're done with a cook on the egg, do you immediately shut it down, or let it burn for a while to self-clean? I'm guessing they detected some food residue in the egg...and they wanted it.

Protein is protein. Let it get good and hot for a little longer than normal and it should clear up you problem. I have had some kind of hard shelled bug on mine the last few times I started the egg, I had a suspicion that they were looking for a place to hibernate, lay eggs or something.

We have sugar and problems where I live some cheap any baits work to keep them away. I have on on the top of my table the first time I saw them and one on the shelf where I store my accessories.

Sorry, while I'm an immigrant to Texas, I'm a Midwesterner at heart, so had to put the beans in there. You should be satisfied that I don't put elbow macaroni in there anymore!

First time for me. Yes, it was awesome. I smoked the veg and meat alone for about an hour, then added everything else and then smoked/simmered everything for about 3 hours. Awesome. I am confident I'll be repeating as chili cookoff champion at the office this year.

So I thought the offending bugs were gone, but noticed that there were still a few on the exterior of the egg tonight. They seem to be hanging out around the hInge and hiding underneath the bands. I rubbed down the hinge with some Home Defense Max, hoping that would take care of them. I also put some baits on the side shelves. I really don't want to spray anything around the gasket area for obvious reasons, and I really don't want to take off the bands given how hard I worked to get it to pass the dollar bill test. If what I tried doesn't work, any other thoughts? I know it's really probably not that big of a deal, but I'm starting to feel like Bill Murray did with that damn gopher.

Get enough of them, use some egg-wash, and you might develop a nice ant-panko crust on your steaks.
