My dad should be on American Pickers. He's great about finding me stuff when I express interest. I told him I wanted to start getting some cast iron pieces and he brings me 2 skillets, 1 small and 1 med (10?) a few weeks back. Tonight he shows up w/ this piece... It's 2 inches deep and 17 inches long. Looks good, just not sure what to use it for. There is no lid (tin foil if need be). Any suggestions??

Nevermind now. I wanted cast iron for the Egg. I guess I can save it until an XL appears one day. B-)

@Lowflyer just so happens a XL is appearing here in two weeks am sure it wouldn't mind keeping that piece safe for you till one arrives there for you B-)Large Big Green Egg , XL Big Green Egg . BBQ Guru, Weber Kettle, Weber Q grill for road trips.

@bigphil trying to slide a small in at the moment, the XL will be in a few when the 2nd child arrives in a few.

I don't know the value of that piece but if you want use on the egg you could always cut the handles off with a hacksaw. Cast iron cuts easy.
-
Cool piece. I'm sure few things can use for. Like hungry joe said can cut handle. Pretty good idea if piece holds no monetary value.Boom

@Lowflyer i'd save the piece wouldn't cut the handles any thing on the underside theres a Griswold on Ebay complete at 300.00 right now yours is different than that one but worth looking into to see what you haveLarge Big Green Egg , XL Big Green Egg . I think it would make a fantastic drip pad for the Mad Max Thanksgiving Turkey. Make the gravy right in itSteve Van Wert, Ohio XL BGE

You can, if you have the right equipment (or take it to someone who does), cut the handles off and weld them back on straight up. Might not be worth the cost, but if you got a buddy....?

Great ideas from all. My neighbor has all the tools to do these things. My pop said he picked it up about 5 yrs ago at a garage sale for $10. Some cutting might be in the near future cos an XL isn't.

Can the handles be heated up and bent upwards or do they have to be cut and rewelded??
-
I'll keep that in mind. It's only 5hrs old to me. I'll let you know.boatbum said:Would offer $45 if your willing to part with it. Send me a message.

Damn!! What drives the price up on that??

The crispness and how effective it is with the stability is what impressed me about the griswold iron cast pan. Iron cast is not a complicated cookware, but griswold just makes it above every brand in my opinion with its effective in how it cooks the foods especially with the frying. Lodge is good brand, but it is like Pepsi to the Coke. I'm biased based on my grandmother's cooking on the griswold, I guess.

Fish

Oh yeah! perfect size for a fish!

Cooked the same, the same food might taste different if cooked on a Lodge versus Griswold. But that difference will be influenced more by what was previously cooked and infused in the seasoning than the composition of the metal or shape of the pan.
Same reason we prefer anything - we like it more. Doesn't mean it's better. A '57 Chevy does nothing better than a 2012 Chevy except empty your wallet faster. But just about anyone will chose the vintage over the new.
With CI, they're much more the same than the Chevys. So no brainer.

Perfect for a fish frying pan. The heat retention of cast iron is great for frying. That's what I'd use it for.Athens, GA

I must have sold a half dozen Griswolds in garage sales when I was younger when I didn't know what they were (got family hand-me-downs, garage sale pans, etc.). They didn't cook so well that I decided to keep them over they're heavy and I have too much crap in my kitchen.
