Hey all, what is your favorite instant read thermometer and why? I have been looking at a few and was wondering what folks here are thinking.
Thanks!

None better than this one:

Most of us have a thermapen. This particular one is a special edition cover design but all the thermapen guts are the same.Dallas (University Park), Texas -
The overwhelming favorite here is made by thermapen. There is an active post that describes some new paint job for them below. It's pricy but does the job and has great reviews. I use it on hot&fast cooks and it performs as advertised. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

Thermapen for me. Works fast. Some other brands say instant read but are not.

i have yet to purchase an instant thermometer yet.. but answer me this
why not use an inexpensive, easy to read bimetallic thermometer that you can calibrate it and it will read almost as fast as a digital "instant read" thermometer- no? prefer to have a techy gadget? etc etc
with that said i may go digital
-
what's "almost as fast" when you are temping four steaks over a 1200 degree bed of coals?

i havent run the 2 side by side.. maybe someone has and can answer

They take too long. I have 3 of them. They all 3 suck. 3 second readings on thermapen, 45 seconds on the analog versions. I also have the cheap $20 digital. Worthless. Inaccurate and slow. Bit the bullit and ordered thermapen yesterday. Should have saved the money on the 4 POS thermos I bought trying to be cheap and bought a thermapen in the first place.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

Plus it has FLAMES dude! Did you not see that????? It's like having a tiny Guy Fierri in your pocket at all times.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

i get it lol.. i havent probed the steak for a temp reading when searing but i have later on when it is roasting if thats what you want to call it..flames and the hair on my arms are not a good combo

I used the bimetalics for years and they work for low&slows-for me the only case for the "instant read" is the hot&fast cooks where a few minutes and the temperature delay will have an impact on the results. And yes it is a hi-tech gadget but very useful throughout the kitchen, as well.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! THIS!
I've gone through prob 10 different analog and Williams Sonoma quality digitals before getting to the Thermapen along with a 3 pack of Thermoworks $19 digitals. Even the $19 digital ones blow all the others out of the water. Tiny probes, built to last, very accurate, and very fast. Even the $19 takes only about 5-7 seconds. Buy from someone that takes industrial measurement seriously. I'm embarrassed I didn't get them sooner.Dallas (University Park), Texas -
Some things are just basic cooking tools like thermapen, rosle tongs, a pepper mill like a magnum, good chefs knife, etc. Thermapen has proven itself.

Looks like I will be ordering the thermapen shortly. Hope they still have the one with flames left!

Yep, right here http://www.thermoworks.com/products/thermapen/splashproof_thermapen_limited_edition.html
I have a lot of quality kitchen equipment and the enjoyment lasts long after the price is forgotten. -

From the title of this post I knew the recommended item was going to be the thermapen. Like many others I have several cheap instant read devices but they now gather dust in a drawer as I only use the tgermapen. It is an investment, but so was my Egg and the meat I cook and I want a delicious return on my investment.DavidBBQ since 2010 - Oh my, what I was missing.

I thought guy fieri when I bought it too, but need a thermapen and liked the flames. Cen-Tex was just being proactive. I should have brought it up first on my other forum before someone mentioned it in a ribbing fashion.

Based on feedback from this forum and the Eggfest I got a thermapin, I have a cheap pre-egg meat probe to leave in meat for slow and lows but don't trust it for final temp, just let's me know when I need the thermapin.Newbie Egghead - Just got a LBGE at the Georgia Eggfest! Life is Good!

I'm with you on the cheap leave-in thermos-I can find them for around 6-7 $ and they even have the ability to calibrate. I use the thermapen as the calibration reference and use them for all low&slow cooks. The thermapen accuracy is not needed for low&slow cooks-but it's the best there is for anything "hot&fast" where time at temperature is moving very quickly-at least in my book.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. That was great! Brought tears to my eyes like cutting a bushel full of onions at full throttle!

I couldn't pull the trigger on the Thermapen but instead bought the cheaper $19 version made by the same company:
http://www.amazon.com/ThermoWorks-RT304-Water-Resistant-Thermometer/dp/B004GB7TB2/ref=sr_1_11?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1338146171&sr=1-11
I must say that I am very pleased with it. I get a reading in less than five seconds. It's hard to believe that you can buy four of these for the price of e Thermapen.

Orderded my Thermapen and it should be here on Saturday. Can't wait

Order the purple Thermapen---it is faster than all of the others---get the purple
