hique grate voids the warrantee

did they just change the warrantee again, seems everytime you look, the rules warrantee, who gets a warrantee, the forms seem to change. any one using an aftermarket fire grate it voids the warrantee now

    im down to one grate now in three eggs, they only last a couple years for me
    :))they just disintegrate. i wonder the reasoning, maybe upper heat temps on runnaway eggs or the coals falling thru a high que, dont own one of those so dont know. it definitely is a new rule change though

  • Hi Q is more efficient. More efficient = higher heat (potentially). higher heat = more cracked eggs. More cracked eggs = more warranty payouts. I see a pattern. Can't really blame them on that one.

    I use them and do not get HIGHER HEAT, just faster heat. Nothing should change (IMO).
    Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

    so far ive cracked a base cooking turkey at 325, and had one base fail from moisture, have yet to have one crack at high heat.

    I was talking more about the firebox and ring. I think (could be wrong here) that they are worried most about high heat as the new boxes have an expansion joint cut in them to keep them from cracking when expanding and contracting through temp changes. Just a thought. Don't really have a dog in this fight.

    havent checked to see what my new small firebox looks like, should open the box tonight and see. this fire grate thing, i saw a pic of the new large fire grate and its smaller than the old ones, maybe thay want to see if limiting the airflow from below reduces firebox damage as well.

    i think i may have voided the warranty on my small when i drilled out the firebox, expanded the lower vent opening, and put on a larger vent cover made from the large BGE's lower vent sliding cover.

    Cen-Tex Smoker, You aren't going to get higher heat.  The heat is always going to be controlled by the amount of air you let in there.  500 degrees at the grate level will translate to some other temperature at the fire grate, but it's going to be the same no matter what you use for a fire grate.  On the other hand, what could happen, perhaps is that the faster heating might stress the ceramic.  I wonder though, if they actually have any testing to back this up, or if they are just being cautious. We'll never know.....

    @ TNW-We'll never know-I agree but the BGE HQ trend (or the info I find) would suggest this is a way to challenge more warranty issues and perhaps CYA with the unstated objective of saving $$ or becoming a corporate profit center...

    Does this mean they are at least going to start sell a better grate are all we stuck with the one's that get clogged all the time?

    If this sort of trend continues, the big selling point of a BGE will become mute! I was under the illusion that BGE welcomed aftermarket products... How long before Guru or Maverick products or perhaps CGS stuff get relegated to warranty void status?

    Thanks Whiz- I was more thinking top end heat if you let the bottom vent open and daisy off- say like a burn out or getting ready for a sear. Seems like it would allow more air to flow through and could heat things up faster and hotter...no?

    All I know is I did a 36 hour double butt cook (ya, ya, ya, don't want to hear it cuz that to me produces flavor that cannot be reproduced with faster cooks).  Ozark Oak loaded up to the top of the fire ring with the HighQ.  At the end of the cook the firebox was completely full with what seemed to me to be a perfectly balance burn.  Never happened with the OEM grate.  It will sit on the side if I ever have to prove I use it.

    Cen-Tex Smoker, I've had my large up over 1000 degrees with a BGE grate, and they brag how the Egg can withstand 2000 degrees or whatever.  But, I think any problem (if there actually is one) would result from rapid temperature change vs. any absolute temperature you could achieve.  Or not, lol!

    Just saw this thread, after I posted mine thread about my frustrations with the tiny holes in teh OEM grate (grrr!).

    TNW, cracks/fractures are caused by thermal gradients in the ceramic, the bigger the temp difference, the more thermal stress.  If the inside of the egg is 1000 degrees, and the outside is 130......well you start to see that high temps can be a big issue.

    But high temps are easily achievable using the standard grate, so I don't think that mere high temps are the source of this ban on OEM grates.  BGE has never, that I know of, warned against exceeding any particular temperature.  Indeed their own advertising has boasted of how their space age ceramics can withstand 2000+ degrees.  Frankly, I don't see the OEM grate as a problem.  I've used my own home made OEM grate made from expanded stainless steel in a couple of my Eggs and I've had them over 1000 degrees many many times without problem.  And remember 1000 degree air doesn't equate to 1000 degree ceramic.

    Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply that 1000 degrees would cause problems, just trying to point out what kind of thermal gradients can arise from high temps. 

    In any case it's probably moot, as I can get my egg to 1000+ degrees using the stock grate in just a few minutes after starting (following your guide, no less).  Not sure how you could get it going much faster than that with a hi-q grate.
