cigarnv,
Ok, you find it difficult to believe. It's still total speculation and is contradictory to what BGE has stated. I don't know at this point why we should think BGE is lying. If they did lie, when they were finally exposed, they would probably lose 1/2 their dealers. FWIW, here is the text of Bubba Tim's post.
"A new dealer/distributor was brought on by the Mothership. The
Mothership went through all the normal vetting processes to include
credit checks and such. A very large order was made and several semi
trailers were sent to this "new" dealer/distributor full of Big Green
Eggs. When the Mothership caught wind of what had happened, (via this
forum) it was to late. Appartently, deals had been made without the
Mothership knowlege and a few Box stores had been sold the Eggs. When
the Mothership tired to call the "new" dealer/distributor, all the
phones had been disconnected and the they had vanished. It seems the
Mothership has been misled and lied to. A letter will be going out to
all the dealers and distributors shortly, and an Offical post will be
coming forthwith. So please lets give the Mothership a break and stop
all this "conspiracy theory" nonsense and lets get back to cooking.
Agreed?"
I don't know how he knows this, but BGE has certainly explained why they aren't giving out the details: they are contemplating legal action against whoever did this.
You can't make this stuff up..LOL!!!! -
i would call bge customer service and ask or try to get a response on email.cigarnv,

I don't know how he knows this, but BGE has certainly explained why they aren't giving out the details: they are contemplating legal action against whoever did this.If this is true why does it matter? Their network failed and BGE are punishing their customers because of it? Yes this is my first post and yes I bought one from Costco (LBGE). One of the first things I did was drive down to an authorized dealer and buy a plate setter and some eggessories. This leaves a bad taste and is not a good way to treat a new customer. BGE got paid for the warranty so it should be valid. This is a problem with their network so to save face they should stand behind their product. Yes I know I have the Costco warranty but this does have an effect on what I buy in the future. I love this thing and would consider buying another one, but I have my doubts with BGE if this is this is the way they treat new customers.
I am truly a newbie and haven’t done any smoking till now (trying to absorb everything). I have spent upwards of $300 on accessories that I wouldn't of if I didn't get this thing and will do more in the future. Does BGE want to lose all new interest and word of mouth over a warranty that they have been paid for? Just seems slimy and doesn't give me the warm feeling to spend more with this company.
I am glad to a EggHead but don't feel part of the family. Hopefully this will be righted.

@Cobra99 I don't disagree with you as you likely suspected you would be covered and probably weren't told differently at purchase. However, if the rumor is true it's not a guaranteed BGE was paid. When I hear words like 'credit' and 'lawsuit' it leads me to believe that the new distributor "may have" gotten these by credit or fronted even. Not sure as I don't know how they operate but when I hear they called and the distributor was gone with phones disconnected, it seems like they got one over on BGE too. Bottom line, you and BGE may be victims but we'll likely never know.
Should BGE honor a warranty on your product? I think they should. If Costco had "No manufacture warranty" on their display, this huge thread would be non-existent.Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ.... -
I won't pretend to know how the warranty cost is handled, but if a new Egg from a dealer includes $xxx for warranty costs, I doubt BGE gets all of that. In the normal course of things, I suspect BGE provides the parts to the distributors for warranty claims, but BGE doesn't handle the claim. The dealer and the distributor do. If BGE bore the entire cost of a warranty replacement, why do distributors sometimes demand photographic proof of damage before they will ok a claim? Obviously they have some skin in the game. All these Eggs have no dealer and no distributor and if BGE does honor the warranty, it is going to be eating a lot of the warranty cost which I suspect normally would have come out the dealer and distributor's profits from each sale.
It may be a hard pill to swallow, but the fact is these Eggs are indeed grey market items. Again, if you buy a Rolex from one of those discount web sites, do you think Rolex would honor the manufacturer's warranty on it just because you tell them you didn't realize it was grey market?
And that's ignoring any responsibility that Costco might bear for this fiasco. I know this thread is full of "it's hard to believe" statements, but it really is hard to believe Costco didn't know what they were doing. If they wanted to sell Eggs, surely they must have contacted BGE at some time and known that BGE doesn't sell to stores like Costco. Surely the Costco buyer had to know this was a dodgy deal. Someone said earlier that they know what Costco goes through to ensure that they are providing legitimate products backed by warranties, etc. So how did they drop the ball on this one?
But anyway, maybe all will become clear with time.

The BGE website has a disclaimer on its website about discount stores and a warning
How does this help the customer who has never been to the website? -
I think it is a way for BGE not to warrenty the Costco EggLET'S EAT
-
Cowdogs, what more can BGE do to warn customers not to buy from big box stores if they want the warranty? Again using the Rolex analogy, what can Rolex do other than have a warning on their website? They certainly can't put a warning on the grey market websites. And I am pretty sure Rolex will sympathize but you won't get a warranty from them when you explain that you didn't know. At least in this case, once the customer knows they don't have a factory warranty, they can get their money back from Costco.
I still think Costco has a lot of explaining to do. Either Costco knew (and they are part of the fiddle) or they didn't know (but they should have as they have a responsibility for selling legitimate merchandise). Either way, THEY sold these grey market Eggs, and I would expect them to bear the cost of it. Ah, but that's all for the lawyers to decide when the dust settles I suppose.
The Naked Whiz -
Whiz, if Costco legally purchased the eggs (which by all accounts it appears to have done so), then it has no explaining to do.
It's no different than me approaching a dealer/distributor and negotiating a good price on three eggs, then marking those eggs up 10% for a neat little profit for myself when I sell them to my friends.
To me, the question is why weren't the red flags raised at the BGE when "A very large order was made and several semi trailers were sent to this "new" dealer/distributor full of Big Green Eggs?"
Even an eggfest only receives 40 eggs and I would imagine that is way more than a typical order. My dealer here told me that they sold about 70 eggs in 2011 - between its four stores in Oregon.

It's been stated that Costco bought them from a distributor and then that distributor disappeared. Why is Costco or the end consumers fault? BGE approved this distributor. Did BGE give these on credit? Does it matter – No, BGE should go after these crooks and make them pay. I am not asking my local distruster to give me service that I didn't pay them for. I'm asking for BGE to give me that service that was paid for. What happens if the dealer or distributor shuts down then what the warranties are void? Who takes over these warranties is it BGE?
I don't think Costco goes out and looks for shady deals to save a buck or two.
Surely the Costco buyer had to know this was a dodgy deal <----I disagree with this 5000% and I say shame on you for even question my integrity

I have JoAnne researching from the local Costco side for me. At this time, my Costco has the MBGE+nest listed as "DELETED." She said that means they were available but have been removed from the system, either for being sold out or some other non-nefarious reason. I'm in the same distributor area as Atlanta, she said. While it's no Costco executive, her nametag said she was an employee since 1988 (is that even possible?), and she's already called me back once since I left a half hour ago to update me.No computer info on the Large size.Large BGE and Medium BGE

I believe they were talking about the Costco Buyer (the guy/girl who buys product to stock the store) and not the Costco consumer.

Cobra99 I wasn't referring to you. I was referring to the Costco buyer who bought these from the distributer. Companies like Costco and Sams and BJs have people known as "buyers" who are responsible for arranging the purchases of products from the suppliers. Again, it is hard to think they didn't know what they were doing. Surely, their first effort would have been to contact BGE to supply them? Why would Costco go to a distributor when they could probably get a better price from the manufacturer? Surely they would have at least asked? And if they did ask, they certainly know that they bought grey market product from this distributor.
But if they did go straight to a distributor (or were approached by the distributor) if Costco is so careful about the products they buy and sell, as one poster claims to have knowledge of, then how did they not figure out that they were buying grey market products?
It matters because a lot of people are jumping all over BGE here when it appears that BGE did nothing wrong. If BGE is going to get bashed here, I think Costco deserves a little scrutiny too.

If someone had bought a car from you, private sale. Yet, they didn't have a driver license. They drive down the road and get in a wreck. Should you be responsible for the damages? Unless BGE comes out and says they knew about this, they don't have to cover anything. BGE clearly states that. Ignorance isn't an excuse, you should know the product you are buying. Especially a large purchase.
