How many bases are cracking?  If there are that many the Egg wouldn't be a very good purchase.

If my Costco started carrying Eggs I would very seriously consider getting my second one from them.  Only thing that'd hold me back is if my local Eggfest happens and they are selling those sizes.

Or another large; I mean, who are we kidding?  :O)

Hope they have smalls or minis...

I love Costco, but I would rather spend a few extra dollars on the egg and support a local business. Lord knows that in this economy they need the business. I'd also have piece of mind knowing that my egg is covered under the warranty. Also, there is something to be said about customer service. When I walk into the egg dealer, they remember me and ask me about my cooks. That just won't happen at Costco.

Authorized Dealer and Internet Sales PolicyBig Green Eggs are not sold at discount clubs or discount chain stores, or through internet or e-commerce sites, and any such entity offering Big Green Eggs is an unauthorized reseller any may have obtained the merchandise through fraudulent or other improper means. Like many companies, BGE does not extend warranty coverage to products purchased from unauthorized resellers, and consumers are advised to check the Dealer Locator to verify the legitimacy of any reseller before making a purchase.

So here is my feeling on the warenty. Lets say you can buy an egg with an exchange warranty. The salesman says hey I can sell you an extended lifetime warranty for $350. I paid 899 for the egg nest and side tables I would pass on the extra 350. Oh ya the 350 extra is what I would have paid if I went to the dealer to get it.

thats a shame if they are charging you for a warranty, its free here and for life. so far ive returned a cracked base, a cracked firebox, a melted out twisted broken lump grate, the defective mexican spring band all on a large. my small egg is popping ceramic in several places, it was a defective mix/cure in the ceramic, i didnt replace it but i could if i wanted too

  • Costco's warranty beats BGE's warranty by a light year.

Even if BGE doesn't guarantee a product through Costco, you're still covered for life. Great purchase. If I see any show up in Portland, I'm adding one to my home.

Makes no sense that they would come from Canada. The distributor is located in Ontario where we have a 13% sales tax which has to be paid at import point. You can reclaim it if you ship product back to the states but it is a very cumbersome process. I can't understand why they would go to the trouble when they sell a large for $1,299 here (less the dealer's discount).

If bought at Costco and BGE cracks, what if Costco no longer stocks it though. Then you're stuck just getting a refund, no?

Correct.  At least that's my impression if there is in fact no BGE warranty.

Heh, search up a bit on what Treager has done with their distribution model.  New ownership moved production to China and took a fresh look at distribution.  Once the discount price Costco road shows started taking place their dealers abandoned them in droves and picked up lines such as Green Mountain, Mak, Memphis etc.

Here's my reply to Jerry @ corporate.

    Jerry;

Thanks for the quick response. I understand the warranty issue. What I don't understand is how Costco got their hands on the quantity of BGE's that they would need to run a promotion. Did Corporate sell them to them? Any other ideas how they acquired their stock?

    Thanks, Bill

Why wouldn't you just go and buy them a dealer? There is no obligation to answer questions as to why you are buying new parts. This Costco thing may have no support - but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Are the firebox and grate not covered under warranty?

You and I know all about BGE but most folks don't.  Moving to major markets certainly trumps the bait-shop/egg-dealer model.  I don't see any posts from BGE upper-management denying involvment with Costco.  It looks to me like a corporate move to ride the wave of consumer return.  If BGE were a public company I'd my stock tomorrow.

Kamado's require support. I've seen enough good grills crash and burn at big box chains due to lack of employee support that I tend to think the distributor network (which will crumble quickly if they continue this) is required to help people understand how to use the grill.

@gabriegger... because they are covered under warranty, i shouldn't have toi buy a new firebox

thjere was a post form BGE rob, who is the forum moderator, that costco is not an authorized dealer.  unfortunately, who is and who isn't an 'official' bge spokesman has been unclear forever on theese forums.  BGErob may be th webmaster, but he also may not be qualified to speak as THE official voice of BGE.

they really do need someone who is obviously a BGE rep to post here and say as much.

  • At Costco today MBGE $579.00. The demo was jacked up. The bottom vent was in the back and the hinge set up appeared to be wrong. The band cinch bolts were not in in between the hinge and had only 1 spring. Minor fixes,But it was still a BGE

Got the answer about warranty about 20 minutes after I emailed corp. It's been 5 hours and no answer from them to the above question.

    Flamethrower

Regarding that $579 price for the MBGE with nest at Costco, if I were to match it on the west coast it would leave me with about an 11% mark up above my cost. If I didn't have it in stock and had to special order, the freight would eat up that huge profit I made.

I'm sure if they get into our Costco's, we'll get the customers asking us all the questions about the product and then buying it at Costco, but they'll be back when they have any problems and expect us to fix it.
