I am not a poet but here goes:

There once was a forum all about the Big Green Egg..
You could see pictures and get recipes for almost any food, even a chicken leg
Stump Baby would recite some poetry and JL would always show the raws
There were comments about DP rubs and various bbq sauces and we fell in love with Blues Hog

We acted like a family when someone got sick, we even had a giant card made for Sydney and sent it to Max
We congratulated folks on births and weddings and retirements and stuff

There would be fests, at first one or two, then they would spread like wild fire and it was all we could do, to try and top the last one with our cooks, and photos, and after parties and such

Now lately there is a current in the air, and it runs against all we have learned and loved of the Big Green Egg and the camaraderie of cooking on the green ceramic
It is a current that stinks like a burned plastic mat and I am sad to say we have lost our dynamic

Hopefully one day soon we can all get back to cooking and pics because that is what the BGE forum should be all about……
And once again it will be a forum that we all can tout…… :)

    Maybe you are

A poet that didn't know it

Well said. We all need to just ignore the stupid stuff and it'll shake out with time. I believe that, anyways.

Thanks for all your posts of cooks, I bought a wok because of your photos and we love it. Sometimes I even cook edible food in it.

There still is a forum all about Big Green Egg
and it still can be great, if your patience I can beg.
We still post our pictures of our friends and our food,
it's only some posts where the mood ain't so good.

But mood is created by more than one guy,
it's with nasty responses that tempers start to fly.
So when rage starts to creep from it's deep dark holes,
just repeat this mantra: "Don't feed the trolls"

Attaboys and off-topics are the least of our troubles,
it's egos and pride that rend threads to rubble.
Learn to shrug off the small stuff, and even the big,
think of fun things, like what Kim would look like in a wig.

And keep posting your stories, your fun and your food.
Just ignore the people who want to be rude.
If we don't give them fodder, they'll just go away.
If we react with flaming, it's here that they'll stay.

So here's to new starts, to good times and fests.
It's WE who can make this forum the best.

    Hey Kim:

I guess I've been out of pocket lately, and, for the most part, (thank goodness) missed all the dust ups. Obviously it got worse than I imagined. There certainly have been some real good times here. I'm hoping for many more.

    Sometimes ignorance is bliss....And, I'm a happy Man! :P

What you said is true and even has a nice ring to it, but I think we are just going through another growth phase.

We all get Eggcited every now and then and post unnecessary or even off topic messages thinking that everyone else is equally Eggcited and will enjoy reading the post.

Obviously, not everyone likes having to select which posts to read and which ones to avoid, probably because the Subject description is vague or misleading.

I would hate to lose what we have had in the past because of a few who apparently do not enjoy it, or spend their time trying to irritate one or all of us. They succeed only if we let them.

I suggest we just all settle down and relax a bit. Then each of us commit to being a better 'Poster.'

I know I can, and I think most everyone else can.

it seems the forum takes a nose dive like this every few years, usually it doesnt last this long and things pick back up to normal with the warm weather cooks and all the newbies buying new eggs for the summer and asking questions and posting new cooks and new ideas.

I agree Fishless...and if people think this forum is bad try this flyfishing forum:

    http://www.drakemag.com/messageboard

I love the magazine for the articles and pics and the forum for some of the commentary but I would never post on it. There is even a warning for newbies..
:P :) ...LOL

  • Is the warning on that forum the general feeling by the older members on this forum towards noobs?

Probably depends who you ask, Whacky.

There are probably some who feel that way, and there are probably a few newbies who have been the victim of that kind of response, who would agree. But I think we've seen that the vast majority of the membership are open to new members, helpful to those who need advice, and welcoming to people who genuinely want to be a positive part of the forum. Just look at the variety of people who post from day-to-day. If we were so unwelcoming, our membership would be pretty darned small...and it isn't.
  • in a private email, tweev stated that he "could take down this forum if he wanted to". i naively thought he meant he could hack into it and disable it.

little did i know that he would simply create an atmosphere of distrust, confusion, and insecurity.

and that we would bring it down ourselves.

well done, tweev. well and truly done.

The warning on The Drake forum to newbies mainly speaks to "paying your dues before you can earn your stripes".

I think that sentiment applies to most anyplace, a forum, school, work, etc.... :)

that is some real talent you have there.....
  • I so very barely out of being a bran noob, so take this with what you will. It seems to me that the "oldies" are extremely welcoming of "newbies" but a few are very intolerant of attitude and/or arrogance. Sometimes a strong push-back happens. Then if the newbie can't take a slap down with grace troubles start.

On the other hand when we come in with questions or post our cooks and accept the advice given with good grace there is no more welcoming people than there are here.

    In my opinion.
