Oil Spill - Not Looking Good
Comments
-
And what does a dividend disbursement schedule have to do with anything related to the oil spill?
-
An interesting image from LSU.
This image is a composite of water temperature and sea height. The darker orange plume entering the image from the bottom is the Loop Current. The fine red line defines the spill.
Here is the same temperature and elevation data with yesterdays NASA's image.

Sounds like a question that should be directed to the author of the article. I'd be interested to hear what he tells you.

Well, the question was directed to the person that posted the article in this thread, somehow indicating it as pertinent to the discussion. I'm curious why he thought so.
-
aaahhhh!!! OK, Your reply appeared directly under mine and I thought it was directed to me. My bad. Sorry.
IMHO I still think it a better question for the author of the article. Deepsouth found the article of interest as did I and I doubt anyone could support it better then the author. We are but part of the audience.
If Deepsouth cares to support someone else's work he is certainly free to but I don't understand why?
Just my .02¢ worth,

Todays image is cloudy.
The projections I was getting from the Governors Office have not been updated for a number of days now. There is still a link to them but they fail to change.
The map below is from the same site but stored in .pdf format.
Due to forum restrictions this is as large as I can post them.

Todays image does not show anything conclusive.
Nothing new from the Governors Office in Louisiana or NOAA except that NOAA admits that oil is already in the Loop Current. I think we could have told them that at least 24 hours ago.

Alot of talk on NPR in reference to the winds from the tornadoes expected and where those will shift the spill Also talk of the the amount per day that is flowing. Pretty dismal.Molly

As dismal as it may be Molly, I can't help think of the good that might come of all this. The environment will recover. It may take a long time but it will recover. We can only hope we don't make the same mistake again!

Gator,
Bens information is a perfect example of what the media wants you to know and isn't telling us. -
Adam,
Would you mind clarifying what you meant by that statement?
My information didn't come from the media. -
I was curious as to how many there are. The figures are HERE. Look under "N. America - US GOM" for the Gulf of Mexico. This page also gives a good idea of how the Gulf of Mexico stacks up to the rest of the world in regards to the number of rigs.
This data had me wondering just how many of those rigs in the Gulf are owned by Transocean Ltd., owners of the Deepwater Horizon. Those figures are HERE near the bottom of the page.
Next question I had was the total number of rigs managed by Transocean Ltd. and where they were located. That information is HERE, again near the bottom of the page. If you click on their name it will take you to the individual rig data including location.
This is just an FYI, I imply nothing with this data. It is just food for thought. I was just a little curious about Transocean Ltd. who are in the U.S. courts seeking a $26.7 million cap on their liability.

The data on that website appear to be incomplete. I haven't explored the site to see what their criteria are for listing rigs (definition of rig, definition of regions, when and how they list different rigs, etc), but there are platforms that I KNOW are operating out in the gulf, but do not appear on the list.
-
That's very interesting Ben! I have no reason to doubt you. I found THIS SITE that gives the same total number if you add them up, 246. This seamed to collaborate the site I posted so I had not doubted the figures of either. Thanks for the heads up.
Gator
-
hmm, very curious. Perhaps the rigs I was looking for are listed under different names. Maybe I only know an unofficial name.
-
THIS SITE is probably the best locational data we will find on the spill. The spill is divided between two maps, the 24, 48 and 72 hour Trajectory Forecast Maps are produced twice daily and give detail to the coastal areas around the Delta and the accident site. The Offshore Surface Oil Trajectory Maps show the southern extent of the spill and are produced once daily. The links to the maps are toward the bottom of the page.
There is also a "Field Guide to NOAA’s Oil Trajectory Maps" that explains them.
These maps do not lend themselves to copying and posting here or I would post them for you. I try to share the best information I can find and to shrink these down to meet the forum restrictions is not in the best interest of sharing information . . . or something like that.

Todays image doesn't show the spill.
This image is an animation of two weeks of thermal data showing the Loop Current. It is originally from the LSU Earth Scan Laboratory. Where they are doing some nice work. I have scaled down the animation to fit. I also removed any redundant frames and was able to cut the file size down from almost 8 Meg. to a trim 1.08 Meg. Wish I could do that with my waist line!
It's easy to see the concern for the beaches of North Cuba!

I have an interesting site to pass on to you. First a warning - so far this afternoon this site has been slower than slow which is better than yesterday when my browser told me that it wasn't a safe site everytime I tried to connect with it. (sometimes a graphic image can be mistaken for a virus and that might have been the case). This site may speed up later at night but no promises. LOL.
CSTARS or Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing.
This site is producing some interesting imagery from a number of different satillites.

Great visuals. Wasn't to slow right now.
Thanks Blair.Molly

Hi Molly,
Thanks for the good news, it was probably just heavy traffic earlier in the day.

Todays image again is not telling us much.
This image is from CSTARS, I have lightened it to make the spill easier to see. It was generated today.

Todays image is difficult to read. This is the whole image I download scaled down to fit the forum, the original is huge.
I have enlarged a couple areas that may be of interest.
This is another image from CSTARS. I have lightened it so it is easier to see. It was posted today.

Todays image . . .
Hard to see oil on this image but it is a pretty picture. I put a tiny red dot in the lower right hand corner approximately over my house. The Caloosahatchee River is visible and Charlotte Harbor just to the north with the Peace River running inland. The next large bay to the north is Tampa Bay.
Hope you all have had a great weekend.

Over a month now. So sad that they cant cap it off.

I agree and the longer this goes on the more wild cards are entered into the game. For now all we can do is cross our fingers and pray.

Todays image . . . speaks for itself.
The full sized image is over 89 Meg!!!
The link to this image is HERE. Select the "MODIS Terra

Todays image looks to hazy to see anything of the spill.
I have downloaded, resized and lightened for visability a few images from CSTARS that were posted today.
Gator

The first three images are an image I missed yesterday. Sorry.
The next two images are todays and are difficult to read oil spill from clouds and reflection.
THIS SITE has some outstanding resources that you will not see on the news.
Gator

Todays image shows small portions of the spill. NASA was late getting this posted.
