We checked out both after our high-end Sterns and Foster developed horrible "hammock" sinkholes after just a couple of years, and neither of us is "above average".

Found the Tempurpedic much too hot and "weird" feeling. Did not care for the Sleep Number feel and had read about issues with mold.

We ended up with a latex mattress that we love. It sleeps much cooler than Tempurpedic. Ours is actually an adjustable bed version (from Electropedic), which is nice for my back. I can raise the foot end just a little bit and it takes a lot of stress off the lumbar area.

We have been going thru the mattress adventure for the last year. First shopped air, then bought memory foam, now sleeping on combination.

First purchase was a Temperpedic knockoff off the internet (selectfoam.com). HUGE mistake, for many reasons. Returned mattress (which is VERY costly and very difficult), hopefully will get refund, and I do mean hopefully. Assuming we get refund, figured we lost about $450 of our original $1699 purchase price. Total waste of time, energy, and money. Mattress was harder than a rock even after 30 days, caused pressure points, etc.

Then we purchased air bed (comfortairdirect.com) from Comfortaire, their lowest cost model (about 1100 king with digital dual controllers), and put a 3-inch memory foam topper over the air mattress (which we had owned) and a 2-inch convoluted memory foam/latex mix topper (from overstock.com for about $100) over that, and put a mattress protector over the entire thing. I think we have a winner. Really like comfortaire bed over select comfort bed, also less expensive. Also love the convoluted foam topper as a sleep surface.

All in you can make the above for about $1550, a heck of a lot less than others, and we can replace the toppers as they age and break down (folks, it is ridiculous to think that foam lasts 20 years (your warranty is for sagging, not softening), regardless of their giving you a warranty - 5 to 8 years on foam and it is ready to be replaced).

The only tweek we may make to our bed is upgrading the 3 inch topper to a little denser (5.3 lb/cf versus the 4.5 lb/cf topper we have now) 4 inch topper, but likely wont do that this year. We love the memory foam but the air allows my wife and I some variation in our sleeping conditions.

    Good luck!

Hey Wess not sure if I am to late to weigh in or not. we have a sleep number bed and if we had not paid such big $$ it would be free beside the road.... it is a king size with duel controls and pillow top... this is great unless one likes it hard and one likes it soft... guess where the hard one lands when they "fall " off the edge LOL we spoon for our sleeping position and it is not doable with this set up. I am above him LOL no comment please!
We did not go with the temperpedic one (sp) as I was told by many they run "hot" with hot flashes a part of my life for awhile LOL I did not need to add to the bed temp any! We did get a new mattress here in Fl and I love it. it is a firm king size, with a firm foam top pillow top. I sleep like a baby and no back ache or hip ache at all the 4.5 months since we got it. I dread going home to the sleep number in two weeks :(
