Trying to decide on a Grill or a Big Green Egg
I started shopping for a barbecue. I had been looking at a Vermont Castings with a rear rotisserie burner and kit- Really like the idea of watching them chickens turn, dripping off to a crispy barbecue chicken while having a beer......
Then I heard about the Big Green Egg. I like the idea of natural charcoal that lasts and natural smoked chicken..... but you don't get to watch it cook dammm! I just looked around this site
a little and well, I thought I would post my dilemma.- Appreciate
any input on which way to go

Johnny,
Welcome,
If you really need to watch the chicken cook the egg is not for you, BUT, if you want the best tasting chicken (IMHO) the egg is great. Maybe if you posted you would like to taste food from an egg some nice egger might invite you over.[p]Good luck,
New Bob

Solution - buy a BGE and a whirligig. Cook chicken on your egg while drinking beer and watching your whirligig go round and round.
-
Johnny, Buy The Egg !!! You will then be sittin on the other side of the fence. You will be so proud of how you can cook something 2,4, or even 20 hours and never lift the lid once to peek at it all the while knowing that is is going to be cooked perfectly and taste awesome. Later...[p]

Good morning,Johnny,
You seem to be a visual type of guy. Consider this, set the temp on your BGE. Put the chicken in the egg(Spatchcocked), have the wood chunks in the fire box. Set down in your favorite chair with your favorite beverage. Watch the smoke slowly wiff out of the chimney while enjoying your company and wait on the best darn chicken you have ever eaten. This is a commom occurence when cooking with the egg.[p]Best of luck on your decision, from an Egghead.[p]Louisiana Redneck[p]

I can see it now Louisiana- Thanks!!

Thanks Bob,
Taste is more important- considering the egg bigggg time[p]

Johnny,[p]Sometimes the best things are those unseen.[p]But, since you're a visual person, here's a teaser:[p][p]

WooDoggies,
you can't see this on a vermont castings. . .and while this is a great picture of a steak searing, i know woodoggies will now post his picture, which many agree may be the finest BGE picture around. . .[p]

Note: I finally tried the Chevre cheese. I'll stick with the fresh mozzarella, thanks! LOL
-
WooDoggies,
you da man!!!!. . ..i could take pictures of steaks searing for 10 years and not get one as good as that. . .don't know why it doesn't grace the BGE catalogue cover (unless you want too much for a royalty, heee). . .[p]if that doesn't make johny by an egg, nothing will. .
-
Rumrunner,
don't think i'd seen this pic before. . .i like the way the flames are going out the chimney top, even though its open. . .[p]nice. .. .
-
WooDoggies,
Hey, now thats some good use of color balance!
If I didn't know better, I'd say you were using tungsten film! But if you balance for the flame, the sunlight goes blue like that. very cool.

Man....nice little thread you stirred up here! Just talked to a guy today who was all excited about the Vermont Castings he picked up. Got the infrared. Got the rotissere. Got the 800 sq. inches of grill space and 5 gas burners. Got the easy rider rifle rack. Says all he has to do is put the wheels on and he'll be cookin![p]He was too excited that I did not have the heart to tell him he cudda done better. BTW, he has not had egged food yet, and I am sure he'll be happy with his purchase until he knows better.[p]The little visual fest down below in this thread has me hungry. I gots some pixtures too. Here is one of my first cooks of some top sirloins a few years back.[p]What kind of pixtures are they showin over at the Vermont Castings forum?[p]Best of luck on your decision!!!

Johnny,
and one more thing. . .you won't make friends like this, or go to 'vermont casting fests' like you will with the BGE and egg fests.. . this picture was from a little cookout we had on new years day at mine and brett's house in northern va. . .woodoggies and mr. earl came all the way from philly just to chow down on eggfood and enjoy the good company. . .i don't know any other cooker that develops these kinds of kinships among its followers.. .[p][p]brett, mr. earl, nature boy, woodoggies, mad max beyond eggdome, and kenny. . .great guys having a great time, and we it all to BGE[p]

Johnny,

Nature Boy,[p]Ain't THAT the truth! Think seeing all this succulence in one thread has pushed me over the edge. Not to mention provided some most excellent wallpaper patterns for the ole confuser LOL. Topping the agenda for tomorrow is a trip to the local dealer for another laying on of hands...and perhaps lightening of wallet.[p]Regards,
Jeff

WailingAngusBeef,
That is one of my favorite food pictures ever. Including those by food photographers using two highly paid fod stylists.[p]I am purty sure Dr. Woo used a digital for this shot. By the looks of the streaks from the sparks, the exposure was over a second long, and the blue of the cool evening light in the background was amplified, while the warm tones of the blaze came through in a big way to create a smegtacular spectrum of color. A thing of beauty when you let the existing light work ferya![p]Catch you next weekend.
