Had a scrap of end grain walnut lying around so I thought for a first carve I'd try an inlay. This file is designed for an 18x24 board that I reduced down to ~ 6x6 so some detail was lost but it still came out pretty great. I cut the turtle's head off to check my depths.

Next up will be the full size board.

If anyone is looking for something custom, I won't say no. 🤣🤣🤣

Beautiful, Mike. I can tell that you’re going to turn out some great product with that machine (and also have fun doing it).

If you’re looking to diversify your product list, bet you could make some wicked engraved sayas!

That's a great idea. I actually still need to make a saya for the Japanese knife I bought my grandson for his last birthday.

If you are tempted to go commercial, I recommend you reach out to Knifewear (https://knifewear.com/). Bet it would work out great if you could produce some sayas in the sizes of their most popular models.

I would be interested in that as well, I’m just using a laser on tithe headstocks, inlay would be great but I don’t know if I could handle the learning curve

Yes.  I'm actually going to be using the CNC to build a Fender P-Bass for a friend. Body is alder with a flame maple top, neck is hard maple with an Indian Rosewood fret board. Going to inlay a set of Navy Submarine Dolphins as he is a fellow bubblehead - worked for me on the Dallas.

I am using the CNC to carve the entire guitar. Found a 3D model online.

So cool! My favorite guitarist is Trey anastasio, who has a bunch of very specific guitars made by a guy named Paul Languedoc. They’re all different - but here’s the headstock on the “Ocelot.” Just beautiful…

Beautiful, Damien. Have heard of Trey, but am not familiar with his playing. Will give it a go.

There’s a Canadian luthier named William “Grit” Laskin who does extremely intricate inlay work.

All the great cdn luthiers are students of Jean Larrivée
Another great Cdn builder is Sheldon Schwartz.
I’m making my guitars with a pocket knife 😀

I am using Vectric VCarve Pro software, .stl file format. To carve the various pieces you carve one side, then flip it and carve the other, using some index marks or pins to maintain alignment.

Very cool, I don't have the skills or patience to do that by hand.
This guitar will have an alder body with a flame maple top (tone wood), hard maple neck with Indian rosewood fret board.
I'm going to glue up some blanks out of scrap plywood and carve that first to ensure all my tool paths are correct.

  • Exceptionally smart move to run a test, Mike. Like running dummy data in a test environment before going live.

wish you were close to me, I could keep you busy.  I would love to learn enough just to do basic inlays with a CNC but no one around to help me

Another excellent and educational post to remind me I am way out of my league with this group.

I bought all my guitars, play them poorly, and am reminded by everyone on this thread, I am way out of y’all’s league, envious too.

    This is very impressive.
