hi All,

New here but love my BGE.  Moved from a Vision b/c I couldn't get parts but found the BGE is so much better primarily with temperature control.  I cooked a prime rib, whole filet and a turkey on the BGE with BGE charcoal and had outstanding results. Used FUGO (Spelling) whole chunk charcoal from Home Depot and it got so hot so quickly that I couldn't control it.  Was fighting to keep my ribs cooking at 225.  Other than BGE charcoal (Which gets sold out quickly here) what other charcoal do you all suggest?

Big Green Egg charcoal is made by Royal Oak. You can find Royal Oak at most big box stores. Hard to beat Rockwood charcoal. The owner is a member here on the forum. Good stuff and can be found at most Ace stores and if not available it can be ordered through them..

  • Welcome. How bout some photos of your cooks?

I’ve never used the stuff due to it not being that easy to procure locally, but I suspect you will hear Rockwood a few dozen times in response to your question about the charcoal of choice.

Being in Canada, I like Basque’s Nature’s Own Sugar Maple or Maple Leaf charcoal, both of which feature big chunks, burn beautifully and emit fantastic odour.

    Enjoy your time here.

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  Above all have fun. Post away with any questions.  You likely will get several answers any of which will work.
The breadth of skill sets that visit here is quite impressive.  If you have a non Q issue you will find someone here who is knowledgeable and will gladly offer assistance.
Since the polls are open-another vote for Rockwood.  🔥

The fact that it got hot quickly isn't a bad thing, just light less of it and get the lid closed before it starts get ripping.  Light from the top on low and slow, and from the bottom for hot as fast.  The BGE is a big chimney starter and you have to throttle that O2 early on if you want to maintain <300F.  Once it's past your desired temp, it's a bear to cool down (unless it's really cold outside with wind and/or rain.)  That's pretty much the norm and can happen with any combo of charcoal and kamado.

I use Rockwood unless I can’t get it from my Ace, and then they usually have FOGO black bags available..

I’ve learned to keep a backup Rockwood bag from now on. @stlcharcoal is the real deal. Big time.
