First of all I don't know the answer and that's why I'm asking.

I know it's old and it has knicks to prove it probably took some rough handling in use. It's about 10" long.

I  kinda thought that as well, but the end that would have been doing the grinding has absolutely no staining, but you are probably correct.

@fishlessman is likely right. I have one that looks almost exactly like the one you have @RRP

I recall my Mother had one but her's was super tapered as was the sieve. The blunt end of the one I pictured was throwing me plus the lack of any signs of staining

my sieve is alot taller and pointy as well. load it up with simmered fruit/veg and rotate the pestle around the sides. works well. saves time peeling tomatoes for sauce and making cranberry sauce. my grandmother would have used it for jelly and probably applesauce

My grandmother had one she kept on the nightstand. She always told us it was a butter churn, I don't know why it wasn't in the kitchen.

Mom inherited that exact set up from my grandmother.. You use the club to smash cooked fruit in the sieve to make jelly without skins and seeds in it.

my vote is that fish is correct but only because cali agrees.  either that or a cockatiel murderer.

Only because the grain pestle idea was in play... and, the nightstand.

ok now i am moving over 100% to the cockatiel murderer theory.  even though it’s a budgie. if it’s wrong i don’t wanna be right.

This. Mom has one and I have one as well, albeit a little more pointy. We use them to smash fruit in a sieve when making jelly.
