3D Printer Recommendations

Any recommendations on a 3D printer or what features are necessary? I’m looking at this as a Christmas gift for our son (25). $500 and under is the budget.

I have a Bambu Labs A1 with the AMS. That gives me the ability to print 4 colors. It’s also very user friendly with features like auto bed leveling. Hobby printing will mostly be with PLA and PETG filaments.

  • The 4 colors is a great feature. I’ll check that one out.

The recommendation will depend on what your son plans on printing.

I personally own a Prusa MK3/S+ and it is a rockstar when compared with my neighbour’s Creality…

You can get a Prusa mini kit for about 429$ right now.

You definitely want auto bed leveling.  Auto Z adjust is a very nice to have feature too, brands have different names for that.  I need to calibrate the offset manually on mine but newer models have a pressure sensor or lidar built-in for fully automatic calibration.

I don't really know what my son has right now. He's on his 3rd.  The second was a resin printer that really smelled like melty plastic poison while he was running it. He returned that and purchased a faster auto leveling model from creality in the $270 range.  I'll find out what model he's using.

  • I believe his main use will be to turn out models of things he enjoys from the gaming world. Small helmets, etc. He enjoys collectibles so he’s wanting to try making his own, not for sale though. Thanks for the input and please send anything else that might help.
