OT - Ankarsrum Mixer

paqman Posts: 4,806
I have a feeling that my Kitchen Aid is going to let me down soon…  I am wondering if anyone here is using an Ankarsrum mixer.  I have seen a lot of good comments about it on bread baking groups.  I think that I am going to pull the trigger but I am calling on the forum’s expertise first.

I know some people are getting spiral mixers, that won’t be working for me.  I need to be able to make small batches too.  I also need to have a general purpose beater.

You can fix it yourself on the cheap. Just don't tell anyone.  ;)

The Ankarsrum knocked the large KitchenAid off its long-time #1 perch at America's Test Kitchen.  Apparently the KAs now have specific time limits to run the machine under high load, and your warrantee is voided if you exceed them (how would that be tracked?)

between amazon and ebay thers a ton of parts for cheap. we used to have a forum member that worked in the refurbish department, now retired, but he set me up with a free circuit board to repair a 25 dollar yardsale find. they are pretty simple to work on. the circuit boards seemed to overheat on the old models, mostly the worm gear (now plastic) on the newer models.

The entry level KitchenAid mixers have nylon gearing. Kitchenaids Professional series still use steel. The motors aren't Hobart quality since about 1992 - 1993. If I'm flipping and refurbishing a Kitchenaid I still try to use OEM (Whirlpool) whenever possible. Some of the cheaper generic worm gears aren't all that good. It's worth the few extra bucks on OEM parts. Worm gears anyway.

Mines and old pro series with the good motor. I jumped a wire so it would only run in low gear for several years before chefrd here on the origional site saw one of my posts and sent me a new board, and grinder setup.  Kitchen aide was going to charge a small fortune to fix my 25dollar mixer

Buy a baby Hobart. Word to the wise; don’t buy used from a pizza joint. They’re notoriously hard on equipment. Need bigger? Buy a #10 (1000# capacity) horizontal roller bar mixer lol

Probably a Vitamix. I rarely use a blender and our Ninja isn’t very great.  It started acting up the last time I used it. Maybe if I have one that’s good, I’ll actually use it.

There should be a post for gadgets that actually get used regularly.  Best purchase for me lately is a cheap plastic cheese rotary grinder. A couple pounds of three cheese blend takes a couple minutes and it cleans quickly with just a rinse. It's just a manual piece of crap that I would buy again if it broke

Nice! We use our blendtech regularly. We have one for the house and we had one for the camper.  I think the older one has over 8,000 cycles on it. I believe both brands are comparable.

Grabbed a refurbished vitamix on Amazon about 2 years ago for about 1/2 off retail (like $200 ish, about the same price has the high end ninjas at the time).  Didn’t use a blender much, until I got this.  It runs daily now.  Just the base model nothing fancy.

My countertop real estate is very limited.  I need something that can handle small quantities (less than a kg) and larger quantities 2-3 kg.  The kitchen aid’s sweet spot was a bit less than a kg.  I would really like to get a spiral mixer but this is not happening…

I know I can fix it, everything is still working fine but the grease has broken down and is overdue to be replaced.  I am not getting into this now…

i bought a basic vitamix about 20 years back. still runs like a champ. I swear I could put a 2x4 through it and it would be fine.

This is true with many products.  From a long term perspective it is also less expensive.  Also, add in the stress/frustration that can result from using inferior products.

I don’t know anyone who owns one but it comes with a 7 year warranty so it must be decent quality… I have seen good reviews.  I just watched the video that @Botch posted.  Taking a chance, order placed!

Food safe synthetic grease will do it wonders!

Mostly.  When I moved to Albuquerque ('87) I ended up buying top-of-the-line KA mixer, blender, and food processor (all three replaced an Oster all-in-one machine, which I bought for $60.  I wore that poor thing out, and realized I wanted all three functions in stand-alone, quality machines).
My blender stripped a coupling gear; fixed it, and then the whole thing burned up; bought another KA blender (even the short vitamix wouldn't fit under my cabinets). So far my KA processor and mixer are still going strong, hopefully I'm done replacing things.
