Since January 2022, mostly Western nations have pledged more than $380 billion in aid to Ukraine, including nearly $118 billion in direct military aid to Ukraine from individual countries.

Feds say there’s no money left to respond to hurricanes — after FEMA spent $1.4B on migrants

most likely it’s an example of concocted bits of bait to create outrage and win favor.

advice to anyone: if a politician gets you emotional, they’ve got you right where they want you.  stay in control, spit out the bait. then decide to ignore or research based on how much time/effort/benefit it offers compared to handling the priorities closer to you like faith family health job etc.

this is not a personal endorsement from me of any spending in any category.

probably better posted in off topic.

Not arguing or supporting the complete lack of support to the USA.

I will say the military aid to Ukraine wasn’t in direct dollars.  It was in already built and stockpiled weapons and equipment.  Transfering that to NC, Tennessee, Florida, etc wouldn’t really help them unless they sold it on eBay to pay bills.  Also, that equipment is being used for its intended purpose, destroying Russian hardware.  Even better, it isn’t American servicemen being put in harms way while Russian equipment is being destroyed and Russian soldiers being killed.

I think the bigger travesty is the apparent lack of a coordinated rescue effort and the hassling being done of US citizens who are trying to help.

Absolutely agree, This was more steered where monies are directed and not usage..

you would think a country with hundreds of billions of dollars to re-appropriate, our leadership could have a "squirrel fund" for us when $#!T goes a bit sideways inhouse..

and yes..for the citizens handling this as a "all hands, all call"...kudos...

I would take these kind of anecdotes as perhaps lacking the bigger context.  The scale of this is unlike anything we've seen in quite some time.  It is not a simple matter to coordinate rescue efforts given the scale and nature of the disaster.

There is also a ton of misinformation around the response to this disaster in NC.  Here's a post from a state Senator:

For the record, he is a Republican.

As for the OP, it is really incredible the extent to which Ukraine and migrants have become convenient scapegoats for anything and everything that befalls the US.  It is floated out there by politicians with ulterior motives, and folks buy it hook, line, and sinker.

    Happy Friday I suppose.

I thought “ya’ll” wanted to disband FEMA and now it’s a post complaining about the lack of FEMA funds.

Yes, somehow the fairly recent votes cast by GOP members in the House have not been mentioned.

Regarding Ukraine aid, the US aid money goes to domestic companies that are producing products for the war. The aid helps Americans AND Ukrainians.

It seems like too many people think we are simply stroking checks to Ukraine.

@billt01 - The executive branch can only spend monies that have been allocated by congress.  Congress is assisted in their allocations by lobbyists, victims of natural disasters typically do not have dedicated lobbyists.  Does that make sense (since) to you?

    No it doesn't make sense/since..

"Yes, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is part of the executive branch of the United States government."

    "
To date, over 40,000 people have applied for disaster assistance and FEMA has paid out more than $6.2 million in Individual Assistance directly to survivors. "

If divided equally that’s $155 per applicant. Not per person since most of these people have families.

It generally takes a bit of time before FEMA can hand out checks.  It's been a week.

I see that the resident disaster-assistance financial expert has arrived.

They are currently going door to door to provide immediate relief funds to people whose homes were impacted by the flood, especially since internet access is still down in many places.
