OT: Something Different

I spent 3 days in Asheville, NC last weekend taking a wood turning class with David Ellsworth. If you’re in to turning at all you’ve likely heard of him. Anyhow this class really upped my game. Tonight I finished up a bowl made from a chunk of Red Mallee burl - came out pretty decent I think:

His studio is at his home and he and his wife provide lunch each day. While eating I noticed this rocker sitting in their living area.  I wasn’t surprised to see that he’d have an authentic Sam Maloof rocker, but I was surprised that he let me sit in it considering what they typically sell for:

I’d also like to give a shout-out to @JohnInCarolina for the restaurant recommendations, if you’re ever in the Asheville area, make sure you hit up Cúrate, Limones, and All Souls Pizza - all were fantastic.

  • Beautiful bowl. I think it’s safe to assume you passed?

Is it weird to look up Sam Maloof rockers and then feel an exotic rocking chair thread is warranted?

Hope to get to Asheville one day, so have taken note of those restaurants. Thanks.

To say that bowl "came out pretty decent" is a lesson in humility. Very nice work, @CTMike. It looks beautiful.

I didn’t have time for the Biltmore but my better half did. She had a great time, right up until the point she got food poisoning from the cafe there. 🤬

It’s crazy that some Maloof rockers sell for over $100K typically, and even crazier that it’s not like it’s a rare piece - I believe over 5,000 of them were made.

Just beautiful bowl.  Another skill set you have quite a talent for.
Sorry to learn about the food poisoning-that is no way to ever spend any time let alone a mini vacation adventure.  Dang!
