Shrimps, cooked or not?

Are these shrimps already cooked?

The meat looks soft and somewhat translucent to me.  I was under the impression that grey = raw; pink/orange = cooked.

I agree with your colour (nod) comment.  However, to wimp out here, those don't look cooked enough for me.  I'm used to a more defined pink on cooked shrimp.  Sorry about the middle-ground stance.

Could they be par-cooked?  Not sure if it changes anything, but they were frozen.

I am allergic to shrimps so my experience cooking them is very limited.

squeeze a lime over it, wait 10 minutes, and eat one, you will know right away texture wise. some shrimp lean orange when raw, i see them labeled as red here

The flesh still looks a bit too translucent for me to think they are fully cooked.    Could be partial as you mention bc they’ve definitely gone from grey to more orange.

You don't want them tightly curled or they will be overcooked.

its what i see buying cooked frozen shrimp from the supermarket. much better to thaw and cook the raw shrimp yourself, i lean toward slightly undercooked like when cooking  scallops
@paqman  did the package have any hints,  i stopped buying frozen shrimp at the fishmongers counter basically because they just grab the shrimp from the bags in the frozen section. i have not seen fresh shrimp since maine closed the fishery several years ago with the local tiny red shrimp stored on ice roadside

Let's backup.  You are allergic.  Is this a requested dish from someone special, or are you seeing if you are still allergic?

That’s for SWMBO.  I am super careful, wearing gloves and sanitizing the sink afterwards.  I have Benadryl nearby and epipen on standby 😂🤣

We purchased a large bag on a campground from the back of a van (👀) of a meat distributor a couple of months ago.  It was a well known distributor that we trust. We split the bag with friends there are no markings on the bag.  We still have enough for 3-4 servings (triple bagged in the freezer).  SWMBO insists that they are already cooked (because they aren’t grey) but they definitely don’t look cooked to me (because of the color/texture of the meat).

theres a way to prep shrimp to keep them straight like that after cooking, basically slicing across in several places. i think the slices are along the bottom but could be along the top, just not sure. you would see the slice marks when raw or cooked. i dont see that in the pics so would assume raw. its a simple test to put one in boiling water for 30 seconds if unsure

If distributor is well known, why not ask them?

  • Google tells me it may depend what type of shrimp you’re cooking. Looks like there are some varieties (e.g., Argentine Red shrimp, Patagonian Pink shrimp, Jumbo Key West Pink shrimp, etc.) that are pink when raw. White shrimp is greyish when raw, which may be what you are used to.

I don’t recall the name of the company.  They were authorized by the camping lot, they had branding on their van, a website, etc.  Not some shady back of the alley meat seller in a suspicious looking van 😂🤣.

Thanks for all the comments, they curled and the meat became white.  They were definitely raw.

    I overcooked them… next time I’ll know.
