Man, $2 per kg for lump.  Stuff is less than a buck a pound down here.  Glad I'm not Canadian!

Lol, I know it has a bad rep but I've been using it for a year a I like it. I've done maybe 3, 28 hour smokes with it with no problems. The price of coal not on sale is ridiculous over here.

    You misspelled “jealous”.

    😂😂😂

I have no experience with Cowboy, but feedback from this forum would lead me to believe that might be $16.99 too much.

Did you try the Maple Leaf from BMR? How does it compare with Costco Cowboy?
I stocked up on that deal because with their 15% off sale and newsletter subscription coupon it was cheaper than $16.99, shipped free from QC. Bought two bags of Costco Cowboy last year but haven't tried them yet.

that would be a strange comparison, that maple leaf is about the best smelling lump during a low and slow on the planet. sad day when they stopped selling it down here, i used to buy it by the pallet from wicked good. i use cowboy often but have not bought the big box store versions, not sure what quality they sell. cowboy at the local market has been fine for a few years now.

I didn't get up buying any of the maple leaf, I wanted to but ended up just waiting for this deal again. How do you like the maple leaf?

Cowboy is a bit smoky but low ash and holds temps great.

As @fishlessman said, ML is one of the best out there. I used it when I started egging, later switched to Basques (comparable, also from QC) when Costco had a huge clearance. Opened a bag from the recent BMR purchase, still as good as ever.

The regular price for 8kg ML is only $19.98 at BMR. Do yourself a favour, subscribe to their newsletter and get a coupon for $10 off min $75 purchase. Order at least four bags so you can use the coupon, order over $49 ships free from QC.  Thank me later  ;)

Edit: crappy tire sells the same 8kg ML bag for $28.99

  • I don't mind cowboy lump, but this is the French version.  I think I will have to pass on that, I won't be able to understand the instructions on the bag.

I'll pass on the costco lump and try the maple leaf charcoal, I'll order 4 bags and see what it's like. It's nice too that this is the regular price. I think I use around 8 bags of coal  a year.

They ship by Purolator, make sure someone is home to sign for it. They figured the contents must be highly valuable since the box is so big, lol.

If they sold charcoal by volume, not weight, would Canada sell it in quarts, or liters?

I can never remember where they do it right and where they do it metric.

Sorry, it is National Rum Day down here in the states and I am feeling my inner pirate tonight!

Pro tip: look on the other side of the bag - your Mother tongue!

Personally, I don't have any particular hate or fondness for Cowboy. My experience was that if it was all glowing red for a  very hot and fast grilling situation it was ok. If being used in a kamado low and slow smoldering fire situation it was kinda stinky.
I haven't used any in many many moons so I have no idea if the current product is much the same as it was back then.

Cowboy gets a bad rap- I use it to start bonfires with- it works great.

I just tried to send you a PM and was denied permission…SO I will blurt out my question here in the open!

I recommend Canadian Tire to Canadian folks so am I blindly sending them into trouble, or is “crappy tire” just a tongue in cheek reference like when we call WalMart “Wally World” for instance?

PM me your reply if you wish!

No need for PM since this is in the public domain...

btw, it is possible to PM someone with private profile, I posted the how-to several times in the past.

Edit: let me guess, you tell canuck customers to get Permatex from CT for gasket install? Nothing wrong with that but I think HD may have better pricing.

Both my brother and I purchased cowboy in Florida and it was horrible. Like burning asphalt and the bad smoke would not stop. Fast forward, Costco in Canada switched to cowboy and my neighbour said it was good.  While I was away on vacation he borrowed a bag of my maple leaf and replaced it with the Costco cowboy, I am now on my third bag and it is good, not really any different than ML or Basques - verdict, this must be produced in another plant, it’s fine and the sale price is a good deal

^^^thanks for the info. Haven't opened my costco cowboy yet, come to think of it it does feel less dense (bulkier and lighter) than cowboy I've seen in the past, sign of better carbonisation probably.

Nice, that's the same 15% off sale I got. I recall the coupon code email arrived in my Promo folder. Hope @mr1egg hasn't ordered at regular price yesterday yet.

Edit: you're in Alberta right? no free shipping for you, too far

Got the code and the code wont work. Plus, its 45 to ship to me in Manitoba. That sucks.
Although, I was just mathing it out and its cheaper to buy 6 and spread the shipping as that is only $2 more per bag than the Royal Oak out here. We have zero options. 6 bags is also just at the threshold for overweight at 70 lbs.

If the bags are 8 kg, don't 6 of them weigh more than "70 lb (31kg)"?

I didn't pull the trigger yet, if this is a regular deal I can wait, I think I still have a few bags left from cowboy.
