Got my first fix of fresh fried okra for the year. Rough chop, Buttermilk soak and then a 50/50 cornstarch to flour dredge.

I fell in love with fried okra while stationed in OH.  Can't get it around here.   :s

When traveling to La for work a nice lady made a big pot of gumbo for our crew, to say thanks for restoring her power. One of the kids pulled out a piece of okra and asked what it was, I told him, then he asked if it was a vegetable, I told him it was, he refused to eat any gumbo since he doesn’t like vegetables. More for me.

We had fried okra growing up once a week during the summer. We grew and harvested it ourselves, I always had my fair share and then some by trading doing others chores for what they were served on their plates.

I would do it again, in a heartbeat, if I could get a plate like that.

Thank you for sharing, I am inspired to cook the snot out of your recipe, the rest of the summer.

My great grandmother (and hence my grandma and mother) always fried okra in cornmeal only in a cast iron pan. I have the pan now that they all used. I wasn't exposed to battered/dredged okra until a young adult. I love it all ways. again, that plate looks awesome.

Been eating fried okra all my life, including pickled and boiled. Never thought about 50% corn starch. I use 50/50 corn meal and flour

I too go with a 50/50 mixture.  I prefer pan fried vs deep fried, but won't pass on either.

If you want a healthier option, okra is also great just grilled, with a brush of olive oil and some S&P.   No slime.

You can firmly put me on team okra.  Absolutely love the stuff.  Lately I have been sprinkling a bit of this Trager Joe's offering on the finished product.

Ain't mad at that at all! My wife does cornmeal only and cooks until well done so pretty crunchy. However, I like God's Pod anyway you fix it.

Also great roasted; we usually toss with some olive oil and favorite cajun seasoning.

My wife loves Okra. I could never get over the sliminess of it.  But then she changed it up, she cut them into coins, battered them and fried them a bit crispier ... they are pretty good now!

My Gran used to stew okra with tomatoes and onion for a gravy.
