Absinthe Recommendations

Stopped to pick up a bottle of Elijah Craig, got the bonus plan and
also came home with these.  First time for this Rye, just read a
bit on it and seems it should be mixed with Absinthe and bitters.
I never had Absinthe, any advice on what buy?

Fine pours, right there. Even on their own.

Sazerac phenomenal. Hope you didn’t pay too much for it. Can’t help with absinthe

No help with the absinthe but would give the Sazerac a go w/o anything more than neat and then decide about some water.  If you like ryes you are in good hands and hopefully at a decent price point.
    Enjoy the experimenting.
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

@ColbyLang - @lousubcap - The BT goes for $36. here, paid $39. for the Rye.
A neat pour will certainly happen before "America's First Cocktail" (I just learned that today) gets its turn.  🙂

To make a proper Sazerac, you're just going to coat the glass with Absinthe and get the anise aroma - it's not going to make a lot of difference which brand you use.  In fact, while Absinthe is the original ingredient for that purpose, most Sazeracs in NOLA are made with Herbsaint, since Absinthe was illegal for so long.

have had this, set soaked sugar cube on fire, melt it into absinthe , drip water over cube into glass, add ice. more a novelty and ive never mixed it. it was good but i dont think ive finished the bottle. notice the proof, be careful with it.

you can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it
  • The absinthe is a rinse in the glass, more for the nose than mixed in. IMO the Peychaud's Bitters are crucial to getting a proper Sazerac and I used whatever absinthe Costco had at the time.

Another classic rye cocktail: Manhattan. 1 part sweet vermouth (Dolin is very good for this drink), 2 parts rye (Bulleit 95 recommended for this), dashes of Angostura bitters (1-2 dashes per ounce of rye, or as desired). Shake or stir on ice, strain. Garnish with Maraschino cherries - the residual Maraschino syrup is part of the drink.
