@RRP , personally I wouldn’t risk it due to not knowing if they were treated with any sort of chemicals over the years they were on the roof. A lot of times people treat them periodically.  You can probably buy untreated cedar shakes though at a cheaper price that would work.

Edit:  if I had to guess, they most likely won’t go to the landfill but instead recycled into mulch. There are industrial grinders that companies have that do that all the time, especially with old pallets.

I wouldn't use it even if I knew they were 100% untreated...imagine decades of environmental pollutants, bird droppings and what not.

I understand what you said...but back here in Illinois...you would be as surprised as I am to see ALL the big tree companies just cut down and grind up all the tree limbs and HUGE trunks into tiny chips...diseased trees as well! Our area in IL also sells cords of firewood for an ungodly price! I've just never understood why the tree guys can't communicate better with the firewood guys!

But as for used shake cedar shingles I have seen too many of the disposal/landfill dumpsters co mixing trash with those discarded shingles to know that back here those shingles are NOT being ground into mulch! Too much bird sh*t on them maybe???  =)

    "Dear Vegan Runner,

All the meat cooked by your carnivorous neighbors are from 100% vegan animals.  Please close YOUR windows when your fiber-filled diet causes you to vent into our neighborhood air. I won't go into detail why fart gas from vegetarians is so offensive, as I don't want to be a stereotype, but suffice it to say, f*ck off!

The problem with the public is the people.

Cooking animals is offensive?  I feel like my guests are much more offended when I serve uncooked animals.

@RRP , those chips are being used for fuel, paper, etc.  It’s product not waste. Mills purchase it.  It can also be regrinded, sorted by size by screens and used for different applications.
