Cracked egg

While doing a gasket and hinge reset on 9 yr old egg I noticed a crack on the base. Anyone have experience with a crack like this. Will the base last long with it?

  • It looks pretty bad to me.  As long as you have the original paperwork, BGE will replace it free and I would recommend you get on it before the summer rush.

What is it sitting on?  I see you have the modular nest.  But, is it near a wood deck?

That looks really bad from here.

I hope you bought it new or know the person that did.

Let me put it another way. Git On It. You’re headed for disaster.

  • Yes I already have the dealer I bought it from re-ordering a new base on warranty. Anyone know what a new top cost. Since getting the bottom replaced might as well buy the top and it’s basically brand new.

Nt sure on price. But don’t see too many broken tops. Me, I would just roll. Plus if your top breaks they will warranty it.

I assume it is an XL.  But, you can look up any replacement parts on the BGE website under eggcessories.

  • Ah sweet thank you!  I’m a bit of a detail freak. So I’m just thinking ahead… if the faded green top looks different from the shinny new base it’s probably going to bother me haha.

I too have replaced my Lrg base and still have the original 2008 dome . . . blend in just fine

No offense meant, but BGE are NOT fine China… you might like to think that a BGE is made in one piece and then cut in half…but well, that is far from the truth! Domes and bases are made separately and days and even weeks apart! Therefore the first time a dome meets a base is when they get packaged! Sure the glaze they spray on before yet a second firing is uniform for that day, but there are variables in the factory production of ceramics.

My 2011 dome looks fine with my 2021 base.

I’d love to know how much BGE is paying warranty claims on cracked XL bases. Apparently it’s not enough to make a design change, it just seems like such a common failure.

I’m on my 2nd replacement for one XL and had my first replacement on an XL that was smashed during a tropical storm. That’s 3 bases to one owner…

I don’t recall ever cracking a dome on any of my Eggs but have gone through multiple bases on XL size down to Mini. I can’t even guess how many ceramic parts over the years.

  • I will say this... the new hinge with the new gaskets make it feel new!  So nice!

I think I am on my 5th base in 12 years, You would think the cost of warranty replacements would prompt a design change. Either that, or the production costs are so low, that they can afford to replace multiple bases on every XL sold. From what I'm told the red ones don't have the same issue.
