Cooking steaks on Large BGE

Do you guys cook steaks with the BGE lid open or closed? Also, any tips on vent settings and temperatures would be appreciated. I'm inclined to leave lid open with bottom vent closed but not sure that's the best way.

I prefer to use my small, but the principle is the same - I prefer hot and fast so that means I prefer my dome open as well as my bottom vent wide open.

Hot and fast for sure. Dome open for typical size steaks. For really thick steaks and family style cuts, you may want to close the dome briefly if you’re not hot tubbing, reverse searing or using sous vide.  Bottom vent won’t matter much if you’re leaving the dome open.

Typically caveman. Get it ripping hot full of lump, no grate, drop it right on the hot coals. Dome open, long tongs, flip a couple times and check until temp get close. Never had anyone complain. Not sure why, just love it that way.

Obviously it all depends on what you and your family prefers for doneness - but here we like them a bit on the rare side!

BTW those are not cold centers due to hot tubbing!
  • Thanks for the response guys.

@RRP - that is a great pic that represents how you were successful in steak grilling contests.  A $$ shot of beauty-and enhanced by the grill marks.  Yes sir!

Thanks, buddy! I was just going to tap your post with a “like” but I was afraid that would not seem proper for me to do! Besides my doing that would not give the resident LOSER to slam my post with a dislike! Don’t you wonder if that LOSER’s mother whose basement he still lives in ever catches him beating the deacon watching some nightly TV weather gal?

Oops @RRP !  That was me unintentionally. My kids were tapping their fingers and swiping away on my phone when I was about to respond. Just went back to check and realized it went away when I chose it again to see. Promise you I’m not the usual culprit. Lol. I fixed it.  Steak looks good which is why I intentionally liked that. You are an awesome egger.

Answer the question.  Were you or were you not in the basement?

Lol, I don’t have a basement. And I get my weather info from the app. Sorry again, @RRP .  Your advice was spot on.
