I thought I knew it all… -or- My recent game changer!!!

Greetings friends!

I’ve REALLY been getting into my pork butt cooks. So much so, I’m selling it to FAF for almost absurd almost Franklin level prices…

With the addition of the Kickash bucket and basket, I’ve started moving from cook to cook with Flash-like speed. And!! I’m saving even more lump from cook-to-cook than before..

so. You know I can’t leave it at that.….
BEHOLD! My next level game changing phase:

The el-cheapo strainer!  The ELS. Elllllzzzzz…

anywhey - this sucker sifts ash out of lump like me picking bacon out of a salad. What’s left is every particle of still combustible lump available. It goes in a bag for sprinkling on top of my new charcoal. And there’s a LOT more of it than you’d realize, saving me from torching thru lump so quickly.

Neurotic? Possibly…
obsessive? DEFINITELY!
Cost effective? Who CARES?!

it’s great for your non- BGE friends to witness. Try capturing their expression in pictures.

What’s your BGE life-hack?

Be nice to each other,
8-Damien

I use a $0.99 cat litter scoop from WalMart.  It is plastic, so you do need to make sure the coals are out before using!

I use a el-cheapo-colander!  I found a plastic one that works well as long as the coals are cold!  But, I like your strainer idea better!

    Great hack!

I just stir what is in the egg around and knock the ash off, then pour the bag directly in, smack the big pieces with my metals ash scraper, poke at it a bit till it looks even, then light'er up.

Kind of interesting. On my medium, I cut a grate to fit and it sits on the lip of my firebox. On that I put hardware cloth. Then I put my fire ring back in. This keeps lump elevated and the hardware cloth lets ash out and keeps small lump from falling. I seem to burn less lump and get better searing. I never use it for long cooks. That’s dedicated to XL.

This is my system, but now that my fire grate is all mangled, I have to be careful I don't catch it with the ash tool and throw it out of whack.

I use my performer and an old grill basket. This pile was mostly mesquite and I wanted to change the lump to oak. The used oil is my lighter fluid along with a paper towel.
