I’m giving up on dome thermos… GRRRRR!

Greetings friends!

I have a massive cook coming up this week. Four days of solid pork butts…. This is my fourth thermo in ten years.

I think the posts bang up against the meat inside…

… causing them to bend, and eventually fail. I suppose I could remove the thermo every time I cook?

jeez..

  • Damien I have a couple of spares lying around that you can have. Let me know and I could leave in my mailbox as I will be out of town all week from tomorrow

I use BGE branded Tel-Tru dome thermos.  I have always pulled the clip to preclude the bend issue and on the longer stem versions (older) I use a sideways drilled out wine cork as a spacer to get more clearance.  FWIW-
BTW - I have had to calibrate one Tel-Tru (of three)  (single point boiling water check) thermo twice in over 10 years (< 5-10*F).  And I check them before any protracted cook.

  • Clips never go on when I put a new thermo in because I rotate them per cook so target temp is at 12 o’clock and calibrate every time.

I use a dual level grate I love (from that guy that had the quality control issues and isn’t making them anymore) and meat sits way up in the dome on that second level.

the 2.5 inch stem teltru thermometer works well for low and slows but add 13 % to the dome reading. naked whiz says to add 15 % which makes it easier. i used the 2.5 stem for along time in the dome. like said, throw those dome clips away.

use the longer stem for higher temps like chicken steak etc.

Hadn’t seen that write up, thanks.

I think I was always looking for large dial size / higher temps, for the obvious reasons. 15% off is a crazy inaccuracy, and I’m surprised the company tolerates that.

It's spot on in a thin metal cooker. The ceramic is thick enough that it throws off the reading in a bge. Nothing to worry about if you know what's going on.

    Now that's a good trade!

Your issue may be taken care of with shorter stem thermos. If not, the cork idea works well. Had to do that for my mini.
