    Another few questions:

Is street or off road generally favoured?

    RWD or AWD?

    Thanks!
AWD off road is all we've done. Street is very fast and you want a good space to run with zero pebbles. I have a recommendation for a car but I have to figure out which one it is. It's one of traxxas's newest.

Edit:  we have several RWD.  Lately all the kids have been buying is all-wheel drive.

Thanks for the intel. I appreciate that.

Would be very grateful for any recommendation, as a starting point. Going to ask at the shop this week, too.

I built an original Kyosho Ultima back in the 80s. It must have been a couple hundred parts that you had to assemble. Do the new ones require you to build them or it is plug and play these days?

AWD off-road.  Basher style from Traxxis are amazing.

RWD is fun for drifting and stuff, but honestly kids will have more fun with AWD.

Don't tell your problems to people.  80% of people don't care and 20% are glad you have them.

Rtr -ready to run is the standard....

There are some kits that you can build.  I remember assembling a Baja four-wheel drive Chevy truck when I was a kid. Lots of fun.

I looked up my recommendation and I don't know if I would go that route now. It is the minimax by Traxxas.

    Lipo batteries
    Brushless
    All wheel drive

I believe that is the one that I have. It screams. Very easy to wreck it at those speeds. It is so fun to launch it off of stuff.

There was a sense of pride by putting them together by yourself. I took good care of the cars because I had so much time invested in them. RTR was not an option for decent cars when I was a kid so I never knew the luxury of RTR.

Speaking of sweat equity, I always thought that the RC Airplane guys were crazy. I have seen several crash on their maiden voyage.

The airplane guys think the helicopter guys are crazy.

I did the same with a truck, hundreds of pieces, bent servo arms or axles, head to the store and buy more parts.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

I  We  They were.  Especially the idiots who bought/built a Heathkit radio, twice as many things to troubleshoot/repair every couple of flights.

We run a few with friends from time to time.

My advice - don’t take em to the beach. Drones were fine, but the cars corroded almost instantly.

Our beaches are salt free. But even the sand factor .... It's not worth it.

I’ve done cars, planes, helicopters and drones. IMO cars are boring compared to planes, helicopter's (full collective) are much more difficult than planes and you will crash a lot before you get the hang of it. I enjoy flying my drone but again I think planes are the most fun. If you are thinking about getting into it check out Real Flight simulator.   I had a truck too @DoubleEgger, I think it was a Traxxas Hawk, dad told me to wait until he got home from work to assemble it…. No chance!

Spent about an hour at the store evaluating my options. Wanted something that was throttle-scalable, off-road ready and wicked fast. Spent most of the time comparing various Traxxas and Arrmas.

Went with the Arrma Vorteks. This one is brushless, is 3S, is 4x4 and can reach 60mph. Probably too much for junior to handle, but something he can grow with. Got two of the lipo battery and charger bundles.

Thanks to everyone who provided feedback. Really appreciate it.

I told the salesman I’d see him next week, when I would be back buying new parts post-crash. 🙃

    What does the "3S" signify?

I wish I had something like this growing up!  Are you sure it isn’t a gift for dad?

The number of LiPo (Lithium Polymer) cells connected in series, which determines the total voltage of the battery pack.

Probably too fast for this old man. But I suppose I may have to provide him with some guidance. 🙂

Are you looking to adopt by any chance?

Many thanks. You were very responsive to my requests for advice and I am grateful. Hope I chose well. What I am seeing online would appear to confirm that this is a good choice.

    Awesome.

Get extra batteries. And then buy some extra batteries.

@MaskedMarvel - I have two for now, along with two chargers. May add more along the way.
