Meater+

Snagged a Meater+ on Primeday a few weeks ago. Haven’t used it yet. Anyone else own one of these and how do you like it? I’ve gotta Thermoworks Smoke and that’s generally my go-to along with one of my Thermapens.

I bought one on PrimeDay also. I  have used it on a few cooks.

I did beef ribs this past Sunday.  Put them on at 11:30am.  Left for a ballgame at 12:30.  Watched my grill temp and my meat temp on my phone during the game.  Left when my meat temp was 10 degrees from target, got home, pulled the rack off and it was the best ribs I ever had.  I know the Meater didn't have everything to do with that, except I wasn't in and out, looking, and adjusting all day.

I am impressed.  They are a little particular in how they are placed.  You have to stick them in up to the line, you have to protect the ambient air end from direct heat.  But, the app works flawlessly.

I love the estimated time to finish feature.  On a spactchcock cook, it was so precise I had my sides done within minutes of the bird being done.  That is handy!

Right on! So does getting the base connected to Wi-Fi free your phone from having to stay within the perimeter?

Have one, use it all the time on low and slow cooks.  For the most part, it works great.

Minor quibbles: because of the blue tooth connectivity, your phone can't be too far away from where the probe base is (Edit - looks like there is a way to fix this).  And it tends to be way off on predicting cook times.  I don't even bother looking at what it is saying until it gets within an hour of the finish or so.

I have one and like it as well.   Only hiccup, at least for me, is that it takes a lot of cleaning for it to charge properly.    I ran into that issue this past weekend while doing a butt.   pulled it out and found out it never took a charge.    I thought I had cleaned the tip (where it charges) well but apparently not.   I took 220 grit sand paper to it then went back and washed it thoroughly and used a scouring pad and it is taking a charge now.

  • Like you I have a Meater and a ThermoWorks Smoke and two ThermoWorks Dots.  I prefer the Dot for the majority of my cooks,

I have two phones.  A work phone and a personal phone.  I put the probe in the meat, the base unit on the "egg mate" and I kept one phone in the garage where it received the bluetooth signal from the base unit, and was connectred to the internet through my wifi.  I could then view the cook using any other device with an internet connection (wifi or cellular) via the Meater Cloud service. I used my second phone at the ballgame.

Basically, any tablet, phone, or laptop that can connect via bluetooth and wifi (or cellular) could be used as the "dummy" unit and must be within bluetooth range of the Meater base.

I think the four probe unit has wifi built into the "block".  But, the single probe units require another device to be present.

Since I was going to a baseball game, I left my work phone in the garage.  Don't tell my boss.  I plan on getting my old iPad cleaned off and fired up to use as the dummy unit in the future.

I think I got a dud.  I returned my Meater+. Got it hooked up and inserted in meat.  My covered deck is right outside my kitchen, and I have wifi extension cloud that covers my entire house and yard.  I left the meater box right beside the Egg and went inside.  I couldn't make it further than my kitchen or it would lose signal completely.  I tried several times and it just didn't work.  I've heard great things about them, so maybe it was just the one I had.  I thought maybe it was the density of the ceramic that was preventing it from working properly. If they truly do work as well as advertised, I'll probably give one a try again.

In the meantime, I had never seen a Thermoworks Dot before this thread.  I ordered one last night.  This damned site has cost me more than any other place on the internet in the past decade, I swear!   :D
