OT: backup cameras

I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado pickup and after a few incidents  :(  I'm looking for a back up camera so maybe
I won't hit stuff in the future.

They are great, they add a wider view. Not really great for backing up a trailer but don't use that enough

Mine was OEM, but make sure it hasthe back up side lines. Makes a big difference mine doesn't aim down enough to to see the trailer all which would make a huge difference

Not really great for backing up a trailer

But on the flip side they are great for backing up to a trailer 👍

I am in the process of adding a camera system to my Jeep Wrangler. From what I can tell so far, the actual choice may be very specific to the vehicle. System features should be somewhat typical across the spectrum. Since I don't have a large (nav) screen for viewing on the dash, I will probably go with a rear view mirror model. This has the option of being integrated with a forward looking camera (on the backside of the mirror) and is MUCH cheaper that adding one to the dash/console. Due to the physical characteristics of the rear (spare tire mount, gate/glass, etc. I will go with a very specific set up for the jeep - outdoor mounted into the spare tire carrier. I will probably opt for the back up lines (parking) and the automatic rear view selection when in reverse features as well. Now that I have finally decided on my design criteria, I just need to select actual model (stainless steel for rear camera mounting hardware and IP rating on the rear view camera). You may be able to integrate back up proximity sensors into your package as well, if you desire. You also may to find a Chevy pickup forum to access more specific advice on your choices. This will likely be a popular topic. Hope this helps a bit. There is a large selection out there to choose from.

I put a backup camera in my 2006 Dodge Ram around 6 months ago.

Well, it was the reason for putting a whole new entertainment system in it.  And the need for the backup camera was to ease hooking up trailers.

I'll get the model number tomorrow for you.  I love the system.  It's basically a large android tablet that replaces your in-dash stereo.  Apple CarPlay is awesome, hands free calling is great, I can talk to the damn thing and it (mostly) does what I want.

"He Siri, play WAP on Spotify!"  (sometimes I throw in 'beotch!' at the end of whatever I say just to feel gangster).

Since it sticks out of the dash, it doesn't really need to fit anything, just make sure it doesn't block to many air vents or whatever.

Ok, searched the web and found it, no need to walk out there.

There are much cheaper versions, but this brand is tried and true...Friend owns a car audio shop and this is what he puts in a lot of vehicles.  Plugs in easy with the adapter, except you'll have to run some wires for the mic, and to tie into the power for the camera.

I used Crutchfield.com for my Jeep.  I hated backing that thing up with the spare tire and rear wiper motor housing in the back window.  I couldn't see anything.  I bought a Sony head unit.  I bought the cheapest camera (with jeep mount, you will want a license plate mount) I could buy on Amazon.  It is awesome!

Crutchfield sends all of the connectors, pre-terminated, to a factory style connector.  It was as close to "plug-n-play" as it could be.  I literally only had to connect the power wire from the camera to the camera trigger wire from Crutchfield's harness.  Otherwise, it was a snap together deal.

The best part to me was that I could read reviews on each head unit and most had photos.  I found the ones that were in Jeeps so I already knew how it would look and fit.

If your factory head unit supports the camera, they will sell you the device to enable an aftermarket camera, too.  Mine did not have a touch screen, so I needed a radio.

It was a much better solution than the separate monitor as I just didn't want another "device" on the dash to look at.

I am very impressed with my setup.  I bought a "Mid-level" head-unit, so I have about $600 bucks total in it and the camera.  I could have gone cheap and done it for about $300, or gone crazy for $1200 or more.  It sounds good, has XM and Apple Carplay/Android Auto, and the backup camera, so it checks all the boxes for a much newer vehicle.

thats something to watch for. rover mounted the camera up on the roof line, gives a tremendous wide angle view, but with the forward leaning rear glass, you dont see the trailer ball

I wish toyota would have put a better camera on my year model tundra, it is pretty fuzzy. I have looked at some aftermarket options but haven't found one that I like yet. I use it mostly for backing up to our camper/boat. The center line on the camera is offset to the left of where the hitch actually is, that really triggers my OCD. I'll be interested to see what you end up with!

When radio communication is used in connection with the shoving, backing or pushing of a  car, the  employee directing the movement shall specify the distance of the movement, and the movement shall stop in one-half the remaining distance unless additional instructions are received. If the instructions are not understood, the movement shall be stopped immediately and may not be resumed until the misunderstanding has been resolved, radio contact has been restored, or communication has been achieved by hand signals or other procedures in accordance with the  rules.

It sounds like it may be time for a rules test.  B)

Since I have not pulled the trigger on my system, I would appreciate your sending me the details on what you have installed. I may decide to go with the in dash solution instead of the mirror.  I have one of the last of the JK's (2018).  I am going to research a bit on Crutchfield's website as well. Thanks.

I keep a small one in an ankle holster. Or is that the kind of backup you're asking about?  B)
