    I get my sear everytime I'm cooking direct, go inside to prep something else, and look out the window to see flames shooting out of the top.

    Yes, @GrateEggspectations he was.  He died when I was 14.  I was too stupid to realize that cooking T-bones from his own cattle over orange wood from his grove in a wheelbarrow with a drain grate made him "cool and awesome" - not "too dumb to get a real grill and real charcoal".  It hit me one day when I was about 40...
