Thanks for your reply! i just never have seen any of that in the Amish and spin off sects that I have had experience with in my lifetime.EGGjlmh said:
They are definately not any of those that you describe.RRP said:
Interesting personal assessment. Care to elaborate or give an example(s)? I've lived around some Amish communities all my life both in MO and IL as well as some spinoff or related sects, but don't recall that they were wife beaters, thieves, or drunks.EGGjlmh said:
You are correct, they are excellent craftsmen but I wouldnt give them a penny. I live near a large Amish community and I do not have much good to say about them as a whole.......And yes, there are some that are very good people.Ozzie_Isaac said:Handmade to order by the Amish. It looks very nice. In general, I have found the Amish to be excellent craftsmen and I expect you would not be disappointed.
The Amish that we have here at first meeting come off as very kind and great people. If you get to know them they may ask a simple favor such as borrowing your phone. When you kindly agree you will then have all of their family knocking on your door at all hours needing the phone.
If you give one of them permission to hunt your land they think that means their whole (huge) family has free reign of the land for the next 10 years.
If you hire them to do construction work (which they are very good at) they do not mind at all to borrow anything you have without even asking.
This is just the Amish around us here in indiana. I really dont think all the communities across the country are like this. I have spoken to people from Ohio that live amongst them and they are shocked to hear what I have to say......BUT they ARE amazing workers. They love to work and custom build the best cabinets you have ever seen!
Sorry to the OP for the hijack and the rantBTW my parents had Amish build their home where I grew up in MO, Other than Dad bitching about all the horse sh*t left behind I don’t recall any other issues!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time -
The Amish around here build top quality furniture. They can’t use modern technology. So they buy a new Powermatic PM 2000 cabinet saw, and remove the Baldor 5 HP motor and retrofit it to old style motive power means. I end up buying those new electric motors with starters cheap, and resell to high school wood shops!

Interesting! But I assume “motive power means” is some typo…mind correcting it?littlerascal56 said:The Amish around here build top quality furniture. They can’t use modern technology. The Amish are not allowed to connect to the electric grid by their religion. By motive power, I mean a Diesel engine drives either a belt or a driveshaft to run their saws. Or a hydraulic motor that’s pump driven by a Diesel engine.I have a friend that travels around Kansas and services all the High School wood shops. He is getting ready to retire, but will keep doing it for a few more years. The past couple of years he has been converting them all to Saw Stop table saws, and selling the trade-ins (Powermatic-Delta-Jet) saws locally. And a few plainers & joiners. Cheap! But they are all 3-phase. I bought some from him and swap out the motors to single phase, and rewire the starters. Easy peasy! I’m sure there is someone in your area that services high school shops yearly. Might ask one of your local shop teachers.

I researched the hail out of leather aprons. I saw one in the atlanta grill store once and put me on a quest. Whats it for. How would I use it. How would I customize it. How would the pockets need to be. How big of pockets. What Would I put in them. How would I hold towels. What all comes in an apron. What makes an apon better than others. So I designed my own. I have found several top notch companies. All the way from italy and spoke to all of them I called. So much over the top and ridiculous information it isnt funny. But I learned a lot. This is mine and my approach if it helps you any.Picked my favorite color. Picket pockets based on what goes there. spatulas, tongs, and forks, oven mit clip ons, towels, thermapen, timers, cell phone etc.Based on my height. Laser etched, by the way laser etching looks the absolute best on brown leathers or hides as the burns show up as shadowing. Colors of leather or soft leather etching shows up as subliminal or suede or embossed. Softer the leather the more suede etching will look. however still looks amazing.for total custom.

Love it. Here hold this victim. Ref the apron I over did it. The length is a little long but works well. The inside has moisture wicking liner. I can attach more photos if necessary. I thought the leather would be hot. But it works.Columbus, Ohio
