Nice video on how ejection systems in military aircraft work. This is what I worked on for about ten years.

There is one error. Video states that when the pilot pulls the ejection handles, "...an electrical pulse goes to the canopy ejection portion...", and that isn't true. When you pull the handle, that fires a tiny CAD/CAM explosive, which sends the signal via tubes lined inside with explosive, there is no electricity anywhere in these systems (electrical power from either the aircraft, or separate batteries, is too unreliable).
My job involved testing samples of both new CAD/CAM, and old that had reached its Best if used by shelf/service life, to both make sure they were still operable and see if we could extend those lives.

d'Oh! Senior Brain-Fart. I meant CAD/PAD, which is "Cartridge-actuated device/Propellant-actuated device". The first uses a small explosive cartridge to move a latch, spin up a flywheel, unlock something etc while a PAD is a small rocket motor, used to push something away.dbCooper said:What is a CAD/CAM explosive? I'm surprised there's no entry in Wikipedia for CAD/PAD, or SMDCs.
EDIT: Here's a link from PacSci, one of the contractors I worked with (still have the shirt!), that explains the different components and how they work. The flexible linear-shaped charge was particularly cool.
