OT: how to kill a skunk?

NDG Posts: 2,432
Tried every humane deterrent possible - started last fall, now back even more this spring, but my grub filled yard is too much for them to resist.  They RIP THE F out of my yard not too mention my dog is obsessed, which will not end well.  not paying for pesto control ($350 to lay trap and another $150 to remove) plus they have to Euthanize anyway.  Soooo . . Best way to kill skunks?

Edit:  no shotguns but maybe strong pellet gun ?

$500 bucks to get rid of the problem sounds like money well spent.

If you're brave enough, there's always the havahart trap & float test. Find a blanket you don't like, a large trashcan, and a strong whiskey. Fill the can with water. Advance on the full trap with the blanket held high in front of you, throw it over the trap, and drop trap in can. Easy! It might take a try or two to perfect.

The whiskey is to soothe your conscience. Don't expect the neighbors to be fully on board, though, so no bragging.

Edit: Or, you could eliminate the grubs in the lawn.

seen a neighbor at the dump, local dog officer, caught a few in the cage traps, covered them with tarps.  he was reaching in to the trap with long welders gloves, grabbing their tails, and tossing them out of the back of the truck. only trick i could see was the cages looked smaller than one would think possible. if you shoot them, they spray, if you drown them they spray

what worked for me was a smoke bomb, find the hole and wait till they come out, smoke the hole and cover up the other entrenches once you see the smoke. they did not come back.

Expert Tips. When choosing a skunk repellent, select one that irritates skunks' heightened senses of smell and taste. Capsaicin, oil of black pepper or white peppers can serve as powerful scent and taste deterrents for these animals. Repellents will not separate a mother skunk from her young.

I've used crab boil or bought a kilo of cayenne pepper and scattered it all over the yard  Dogs might not like it either tho, so be careful of where you put it.

I got a really nice skunk trap  that prevents them from spraying after capture, also got a night vision Field Cam . . after I bag a few I am going to borrow buddys truck and drop them off deep in woods.  Feeling good about this plan.

Just one light sprinkling of cayenne (out of a spice bottle!) around my communal juniper, eliminated all the urine stains in my driveway.  I hate being mean to the local dogs, but if their owners won't restrict them, I can at least repel them.
