Concrete Counter - First Egg Table
CoastalDawg
Posts: 7
My first BGE table for my XL. Framed with pressure treated 2x4s, clad with Hardie siding, wood trim and DIY concrete counter tops using rapid set mortar mix. Several things I would do different next time, but works for my needs.

Great skill set and outcome right there. Nailed it!Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

Nice work @CoastalDawg - I like the clean lines.
I was discussing something like this as a project with S-I-L, who has numerous woodwork skills and tools.
The concrete;
- did you reinforce it?
- what's the heat resistance / considerations?
- I assume you set it in trays then moved in to position, how's it fixed in place?
Cheers.Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay -
Outstanding! Good job!

Very nice! The concrete top is impressiveThe problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

@CPFC1905 I did not reinforce the concrete because I choose to use rapid set mortar mix. See video https://youtu.be/T7mYB6x68DY. I watched dozens of videos demonstrating different countertop methods and choose this one. It was very easy, just don’t forget to spray WD40 in each form.
As for heat issues, my egg is sitting on a table nest which provides an air gap underneath. No issues. The table is actually freestanding but touches the side of my house so it looks built in. It weighs a ton without the countertops, so it isn’t moving. -
@Cuda1965 and @StillH2OEgger. The main things I would have done different are; thicker wood trim, narrowed the depth of the right and left cabinets to have a larger overhang on the counter top. Also, if you notice the cabinet on the left has very little exposed siding around it, which was a pain to do. This was because the stainless cabinets I ordered and based the design off of were on back order and I had to audible with different cabinets after I constructed the table.

I think plain concrete looks great particularly with your setup. I did the same thing with my outdoor kitchen. I used the rapid set concrete to make the two concrete pads that my medium and XL egg sit on, but then I decided to play around with epoxy to create a granite looking finish.
