Emergency water storage

I just want to know what other people do.
I have purchased a 55 gallon drum food grade that I plan on keeping filled hopefully never needed.
What do I do to keep it usable?
How long is it good for?
Do I need to purify before using?

Thanks again

It’s cool to soak bacon in it.

So I assume this is potable water? I wouldn’t think any purification is needed upon use. I would keep it in a cool dry environment. Really unsure of how long it would be good for. Even bottled water has an expiration date on it these days.

Why the need for 400# of water as an emergency supply?
