  • I have no first hand experience, but a YouTuber who I regularly watch, Guga Foods.  Uses them all the time.  Aside from the diameter they seem to work well.  He even uses them when he fries food, i.e. the meater gets completely submerged in hot oil.  That impressed me the most.

Love my MEATER. It has to go in deep though and is pretty wide. Great for the joetissierie and regular smoking. Friends have purchased it after seeing mine in use. Good luck if you buy it.

My brother and brother in law both have them and really like them. BIL suggested that my brother get the extended range model. He did.

i was a total skeptic, figured no way that thing could work.  but a friend has it, and it seemed to work great.  he was cooking chicken, inside an egg.

Perfect timing, @Gilabert !  I've received a couple "sale" emails from them and was wondering...

  • I was one of the first users when it came out and I still like it a lot. There's nothing else that can do the job on a rotisserie!

I think the concept is pretty cool, but I've never felt spot checking with a regular Thermopop was a burden.

I also have no first hand knowledge but have several trusted sources that LOVE theirs.
  • I got the 4 probe block for my birthday in November.  I used it for Thanksgiving on 2 birds - breast and thigh on each.  One one inside in the oven and one outside in my egg, it worked well.  The base "block" needs to be near the probes and I was about mid-way.  So it got flakey with bluetooth distance, I think.  But it did the job and temps were right on!  I'm looking forward to trying it with multiple steaks on higher heat.

"So it got flakey with bluetooth distance"

That was my biggest complaint. Transmission distance, IMO, is terrible.
But is is nice not to deal with wires.

Oh! I didn't think of that!  Yes on a rotisserie it would work great!

Can you provide details on the issues?  I have not experienced that with mine.

I have the single, plus model. Probe in food, base on table next to Egg and iPad just inside the back door as relay to my wi-fi. Distance from base unit/Egg to iPad inside plain old wood house is about 12 feet. Signal drops in and out constantly, but it does work. If I'm only doing bluetooth, signal is fine checking from my phone, if I'm on my back deck close to the Egg.
Like others have said, It's great if your spinning something. Otherwise it's just easier to used a wired model that will link direct to wi-fi so I don't have to use my iPad or 2nd phone just to link up. My only other small gripe is the diameter of the hole it puts into the meat compared to other probes on the market.
    I love the concept.

I use mine all of the time and love it. I use it a lot for spatchcocked chicken, reverse sear steak, brisket, and pork butt.
    Pros:
    - Completely wireless, so no fuss like my other probes
    - Reads both ambient and internal in one unit
    - Can be set up to see temps anywhere you have an internet connection (need second iOS/Android device)
    - Can be used on a rotisserie, if you have one (which I don't)
    Cons:
    - As mentioned, diameter is quite large
    - Probe MUST be inserted about 3 inches to protect internals of unit
    - Ambient sensor must be SHINY clean, or it won't charge for next use
Definitely a cool tool (and toy).

Isn't the base unit talking to your wi-fi router, which in turn is talking to your iPad?

  • I use mine all of the time and like it a lot. Only issue is that the signal drops a lot so if I set it up on an old devise that I keep near the egg and use it that way.  Hope this helps.

There is another model made by yummly-

No experience with any of them, but the Yummly does get good reviews and seems some people prefer their app.

No, Plus model base receives signal from the probe in your food and then sends it, via Bluetooth, to a phone or iPad in range and in turn links to your home internet. Then you can see temps by using yet another phone or iPad via WiFi.
so basically, the MEATER needs to use a dedicated phone or iPad as a router to link to home WiFi.
So yes, it’s great there are no wires.
And it’s great that the little MEATER base runs off a battery. But it relies on you having an extra, dedicated Bluetooth device, charged and within range of your grill to get WiFi information and control the unit away from your grill with a second phone or iPad.
