B&B Charcoal

I had to buy a bag of B&B Charcoal today because Ace is not able to get Rockwood for some reason. Opened the bag and poured it in. Immediately noticed trash in the bag. I guess this is pretty typical based on what I've read about it.

    Maybe it’s the automatic fire starter included with every dump in the egg  :).  I feel your pain though, getting low on lump here and seeing some strange lump showing up.

    Haha... could be! I would think something like that would burn up during the production process.

    Curious about the process for trying to acquire Rockwood from Ace. Did you go to the store to order or try to place on there website for delivery at your particular Ace Hardware? The latter is my method so I want to make sure I don't run into any issues when it's time to reorder.

    I found almost the exact same thing in my 1st bag of KJ lump, but the twine was green. I bought 4 bags from Costco during a sale they had at the beginning of quarantine. So far, not impressed. Between the trash and the fact that it took a solid 30 mins to smell good, I’m still on the Rockwood bandwagon.

    @StillH2OEgger The Ace here usually stocks it and I just pick up a bag when I need it.

    I bought a few bags of it at Academy and really like it.  I have used Rockwood and other good brands and I think B&B is good.  Just lit some 45 minutes ago for overnight pork butt cook.

    13.00 a bag at Academy across the street from my office. Not as good but, Rockwood is too hard to find around here.

    Lump discussions here are hotter (pun intended) than religion or politics.  In the end it all burns.  Sometimes it takes quite a while and the burn rate is a bit excessive for the equivalent output (larger fire to get to the same BGE temp).
    FWIW-
    Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

    Don’t get me wrong.  I really like Rockwood and others.  But for the price B&B is damn good.

    I just went 17 hours(took off the Egg 30 minutes ago and not wrapped and resting)on a pork butt at 235 degrees with B&B with plenty left over in my LBGE.

    What do you think? I was using Cowboy Brand and it was super sparky and some of it wasn’t fully carbonized, so saw some Instagram chefs using FOGO and thought I’d give it a try. I’m tired of burning my arms when I light the Cowboy Brand.

    I like it. It's a decent substitute when you can't get RW.

    What has happened with Rockwood? My large stash finally was used up. I didn't realize it was in short supply.

    Who says it is in short supply?  You have had an issue with your local store. Haven’t heard others having the same issue.

    RW & Fogo are my go to. 

    I usually order RW on at Ace and wait for it to come in. My Ace stores don't stock it. Fogo, I order online and its delivered to my door.

    Must be an Ace Hardware issue since it seems several Ace Hardware stores are unable to provide it.
