Leave some ash on the bottom to help insulate it. Leave about an inch. Started doing this after first one cracked, not had the issue reoccur yet. It has been 5 years. The first one cracked 11 months after I started using it.

What is frustrating when you replace the base for me is that I like to use the Rutland gasket that RRP sells.  So even with the warranty, I'm spending money on the gasket, sealant, and 3M stripper thingy.  Not a ton of money I know.  I will wait to replace the gasket the next time until the factory gasket is destroyed.  Unless of course this base lasts forever, which I doubt!

Install the gasket on the lid instead of base
Thanks for that suggestion. I'll do that the next time!

  • So is it speculated that they crack due to the high temperature heats? I bought my egg more for low and slow cooks, so I can just keep doing that and use the Napoleon for the high temperature cooks ... so it would be good to know, if I plan to run my XL egg at 350F or lower, am I at any risk here?
