XL Fire Grate Replacement

It has a crack in it and won't be covered under warranty due to its age. A replacement grate is $80. Any suggestions for a replacement grate? Would a kick ash bucket solve the problem?  Thanks.

Northern Colorado Egghead since 2012.

XL BGE and a KBQ.

I have the Kick Ash basket and much prefer it over the stock charcoal grate.  I just shake the ash to the bottom of the egg just prior to a cook (and clean the ash out if there's too much).  Couldn't be easier.

I have the Kick Ash basket as well and love it.

Replace with a kick ash basket.  Better air flow, clean out the ash easier, and it will last much longer.  Add a kick ash can underneath for super easy cleaning.

well crap, I threw an older rusty one away two weeks ago thinking I would never use it.  I have switched to KABs and dont plan on going back to the older floor drain model.

I still have mine. But I switched to the high que grate.

The KAB is nice, but if you have this, the KAB becomes redundant.

I had the KAB in both my Eggs, but now I only use the High Que grate. You do not need to shake a basket anymore. I have them in the XL and MMx.

You can get these in any size, or used to be able to, that was just the first link I came up with.

@nolaegghead turned me on to these. The Naked wiz also has a review on them as well.

Been using it now for years. Personal preference only.

My baskets deteriorated over a few years, of heavy use, but, I am also aware of a change made that gives the KAB a much longer life span.

Either of these products will get the job done. But you have to understand how sloth-like lazy I am, to know why I like the High Que grate.

mine is the XL OEM manhole grate. Honestly, the 20$ is for shipping. You or anyone else can have it for free. I do not see any use for it with the KAB.

Where did you find the highq for the XL?

I got mine on amazon. I have one in the 2XL and the XL since the charcoal grate is the same size. This makes some people’s head hurt, but I run them perpendicular under my KAB:

Using both has really good airflow, but helps keep some of the smaller pieces of lump from falling through at the same time.
