Joetisserie questions

Hi all,

I'm relatively new to the egg and have been learning from you all on this forum for a while, so thank you for shortening my learning curve.  The quarantine has me itching for a new accessory and the joetisserie caught my eye.  I have watched YouTube videos and researched the forum, but can't really get a definitive answer on my question which is do you need to use a drip pan or not? Not a huge deal on the pan, but I'm just wondering if you have to use one do you have enough room to get enough charcoal to get sufficient heat and duration for the cook.  If you don't use one, are the drippings from say a chicken more than if you were to do it spatchcocked raised direct?  Thanks in advance.

    I'll fold a foil pan in halfish and use it with poultry only. Bank the coals to the back and drip pan in front of it.

    I have a spider, would it work to put the drip pan on that?  Not sure how the protein sits in the egg.

    Currently I wedge in 2 fire bricks (approx $3 each at Tractor Supply) and create a dam for the charcoal.  Seems to work well enough for me!  Done several whole chickens, wings and even a turkey this way, and no one's ever punched me in the throat because of my methods!

    Ive done it spaced, one half,  and regular bed of coals.  Works fine.

    I use a drip pan most of the time with a spider set up.  Also use the kickash basket with the divider.  Love my joe and the spin is delightful.
    BGE Large and MiniMax, Napolean 500.  Obsessed with rotisserie.
