My last Tacoma was 19 years old before my son wrecked it. I bought another one. That’s all I can add to this conversation.

Large BGE & Mini Max for the wok. A few old camp Dutch ovens and a wood fired oven. LSG 24” cabinet offset smoker. There are a few paella pans and a Patagonia cross in the barn. A curing chamber for bacterial transformation of meats...

I am really leaning toward the TRD offroad package. Not going to be heavy offroad, but would love to be able to take dinner un maintained desert and mountain roads.

Love my new Tacoma Offroad, but another 75hp would be really nice.

I'd look at what Consumer Reports has to say about both trucks as their ratings are based upon consumer feedback from 1000's of people.

I am currently driving my 2005 Tacoma Sport I bought new. It now has 202k and still going strong. I know you can’t go wrong with a Tacoma...

We bought a new Tacoma in 2000. Still driving it today. Most reliable vehicle I have ever had.

I love the Tacoma when I test drove it but only issue I had was the cab size.

If your were talking Tundra vs 1500 or f150 that is different conversation.

    I have a 2000 Tundra - 325,000 miles and still going strong!
    I have a 2013 Tacoma - 63,500 miles and still going strong!
    Umm what was the question?

But we aren’t.  Tacoma resell value makes it a much cheaper vehicle to own.

I bought a 2008 with 54,000 miles in 2011/12. Now have 147,500 and never any issues. I am about to replace my ball joints and front rotors because I live in a backwoods town in Oklahoma with terrible roads, so the suspension takes a beating. If I buy another truck again it will be a Tacoma.
  • Last four trucks were Toyota's. Bought the wife a 16 Tacoma, she loves it. I drive a Tundra for the extra room..

I had a 2009 TRD Sport = Loved it no issues    I have a 2017 TRD Sport = Love it no issues. The 09 had a 4.0 and got about 21mpg my ‘17 has the 3.5 has more bottom end torque and gets 24 mpg.  We use my truck for travel. It’s a lil stiff on the hwy but not terrible for being a 4x4.

Speaking of resale. My son rolled my 2000 model Tacoma in December and totaled it. Insurance gave me north of $9K for that. I was shocked.

Same story here, except it wasn't @SciAggie's son who wrecked it, it was some other guy.   ;)

I had a 1991 Toyota pickup from before they called them Tacoma’s. When I traded it for some house repairs in 2007 it had 217,000 miles . I had only ever done standard stuff like brakes, plugs, tires, belts,  and one set of shocks. The AC was out and it would have had to be replaced because the old Freon was verboten. I towed a 19 foot boat with it and moved everything into my house with it. I still believe in Toyota’s and am strongly considering a RAV 4 Prime for my next vehicle.

I've got a 2009 taco TRD offroad, and it's running like a champ and will keep going for a long time.  I'll add that Tacoma's have a active forum as well, www.tacomoworld.com   It will hold it's value, there is lots of aftermarket mods and online howto videos.

I had to replace the steering gear, that was the most I've done besides brakes and oil.

    Pros:
It will run forever, drive through anything, and stuff I said above.

    Cons
It rides like a bouncy old truck and is noisy as fucdge.  It needs just a bit more HP, but somehow drains gas like nothing I've ever owned, combined with a small gas tank means like 250 miles/tank.  All of this hopefully has been addressed in the last 11 years.

Thanks all. Pretty much confirms what I have seen online and YouTube. I have always had GM/Chevy trucks and never disappointed. I think I will go Toyota this time.

Only thing is Tacoma is considered to be in the small size class trucks and you can buy a 1500 series truck in the mid size class for about the same price. I’m in the market myself and have been weighing both options. Good luck.

Mid size is what I want. Two of three kids are older and close to leaving the nest. They don't travel with us as much. We also have a Kia Sorento if we need the room. I also don't haul enough to need a full size.

toyotas dont like salt on the road, they go for ever and are good at replacing the frames in the upper snow belts. dads is a 99 with 240k on it had the first frame replaced, dont think they will give him another. they never seem to fix that problem, first frame i saw replaced for free was early 80's on a friends truck.  dads tundra needs a new frame again but its time to just drive that truck into the ground.  all over a tundra over a chevy though

My brother-in-law, father-in-law, and my father-in-law's own father are either retired and/or still a long-term employee at General Motors. All 3 drive Ford trucks. I don't know if that's indicative of anything outside of seeing how the sausage is made, but that said I'd get the Tacoma. I've owned 3 of them. The last one hit 275k miles after a decade before I traded her in on an F150.... and they still gave me close to $9k trade-in.

Do a LOOOONNNGG test drive on the Tacoma. The low power and weird transmission shifting will drive you crazy. There is ZERO low end torque. You have to keep it above 5000 rpms for it to get out of its own way. I kept mine for 3 months and could stand it no longer.

They are definitely under-powered. I'd mash the gas and nothing would happen, but not to fear, I'd eventually catch up to traffic when going down hill.

they are rocket machines compared to the 89 dodge i had for 30 years, a 4x4 with a top speed of 80 down hill with a 125 hp motor. a 1940's bread truck could kick my arse =)
