it's all done. I did two overlay costings, reach with different amounts of pigment. I then polished it up and sealed it.
Next step is to put the stone on it...XL BGE and Kamado Joe Jr. -
I used pigment in the thinset mortar so anyplace it shows would blend.

haven't touched this since last post. The weather finally broke (its nice) and I have been enjoying free time on the water. Looking to finish it up over the next week.
The KitchenAid access doors fit, but the mounting flange that allows you to screw into the structure is not deep enough. With the stonework/mortar/concrete board I have 2in before the metal studs. The mounting flange is only 1.5in deep. I am picking up some stainless bar stock to extend the mounting flange today.
I also have to decide if I want the stonework to go in the inside of the egg shelves. I do not think there is room in the XL shelf. I do have boxes of porcelain slate looking tile I was thinking of using left over from my home. It is only about .25in thick. Something to keep in mind when designing.
Speaking of that, I made the concrete slabs for the egg shelves overhang out 1.5in from the concrete board. In retrospec I should have done a solid 2in. I did not have the stone picked out at the time and I had a very hard time finding something I liked that would not stick out past the concrete shelf. Something to keep in mind when designing.
I did a ton of browsing and calling various vendors. There does not seem to be a consensus on mounting doors. You can either mount them right on the concrete board then set stone up to the bezel, OR, do the stone work and have the bezel on top of the stone. I chose the latter. I did not want to see the crisp, sharp stone cuts around the doors when the stone is random shaped.
Again...something to consider when designing your island. Hard to foresee these details when DIYing and your first time....XL BGE and Kamado Joe Jr. -

Man that is magnificent. Love the attention to detail. Them corners of stone looks lime you just molded them on around the corner. Nicely done.

Thanks. The rack is a Webber rack. I love it. It's breaks down also to clean and store.

I built the gate on a slant to follow the ground contour. Didn't want any kiddos sneaking under it.dbCooper said:Been following this build, looks like you're almost there. Nice work! Then time to get that gate squared up? 🙂

All done. Need to plant some grass and seal the stone. Winter freezing will be a real test of the counter top.
My next project is adding in outdoor speakers and wiring up overhead lighting. I will probably add a rain proof ceiling next year. It has a deck above it, but rain comes in between the boards.

I put spacers on the rear table nest feet to check out dome clearance when it's open. I haven't removed the spacers yet... Need a helper for that.

Speed, fantastic build and very interesting. Can I ask where the lakehouse is and what lake? Man, what a great spot. You will really enjoy it over the years. If I can figure out how to post pictures, I will post my island build but it doesn't contain the egg (all-wood deck and house). The medium egg sits in the nest that I pull out into the stone driveway for cooks. Worried about starting forest fires.

That looks great. Are those stainless doors just for access to storage, or are they min fridges?
For winter, you could go to a boat canvas shop and have them make you a custom canvas cover to go over everything. You could "anchor" small discrete pegs into your mortar joints to secure the canvas to with those bungee fasteners like they use on boat canvas, like these:

I am in South Eastern Wisconsin. The lake is Lower Nemahbin. Just found this you tube video showing some drone footage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pmf-7-hs0HU
The stainless doors are KitchenAid access doors. https://kitchenaidgrills.com/products/built-in-grill-cabinet-in-stainless-steel-single-access-door-18 Just a frame and door. I can store inside the island. While not waterproof, as long as it is sitting on a spacer or block it will not contact water. I ended up NOT painting on a waterproof sealer on the concrete before I built the island (I was initially going to).
As to covering it all winter, while I do not cook outside every day like I do in summer, I still want access to it during winter. My only real concern is the countertop absorbing water and then splitting when freezing. Tons of sealer should mitigate that, but who knows...XL BGE and Kamado Joe Jr. -
Thanks. Enjoy!
